Canal Winchester 1 Westerville South 5
The tournament was upon
the Indians and they were ready to send the South squad
packing with a one and done. A pleasant night was on
tap weather wise, gone were the rain clouds all that
was left was a pitch that looked like France in 1918.
Large holes here and there with plenty of mud for all.
First things first, The
Junior Varsity picked up an extra game against Bexley
on Saturday night. The women teams from Canal have never
had much luck playing over in Bexley, this was a different
evening. The team that visited Bexley included keeper
Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing,
Megan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart; midfielders Anne Hippler,
Samantha Barwick, Jenna Zuberi, Kyrstin Warnimont, and
strikers Abby Ternasky, Mac Harper and Brennen Hoptonstall.
Abby Ternasky scored the match’s only tally giving
the Indians a 1-0 advantage. Tough luck followed as
Abby then went down with a turned ankle and was lost
for the rest of the match. The Indians were down to
only 10 players but were equal to the task. Savanna
Daily made 11 saves to slam the door in Bexley’s
face. The victory brought the JV record up to 13-1-3.
Outstanding!
Three days after the
JV’s great success the varsity headed north to
South. Starting line up named Whitney McDonald, Taylor
Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind,
Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Andrea Ratliff,
Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman. The remaining 21 who
made the trip ready to go were Ashley Walcott, Jordan
Guiler, Kaleigh Delong, Alex Cremeans, Jenna Zuberi,
Caitie Traylor, Rachel Monsour, Kyrstin Warnimont, Megan
Byrd and Anna Hippler.
The anticipation of a
victory faded in the second stanza. The Indians were
sitting all knotted up 1-1 after a beautiful goal from
Katie Hahn’s corner kick. On the back post Jessica
Gabral thundered in and nodded in the Indians last goal
of the season. Number 52 was in the bag, unfortunately
the Indians would need 5 more and those were not found.
The bus bounced home as the team mulled over the season’s
end. Final record was 9-6-2, good but not good enough.
All that is left is the
team awards banquet tentatively set for November 2.
October 15, 2009
Canal Winchester 6 Logan Elm 0
Liquid sun shine
again played into the Indians plans for the bodacious
“Shoot for the Cure “matches. Resplendent
in pink the Indians were set for a festive crowd, immaculate
groomed pitch, senior night and a worthy opponent to
focus on helping raise money for the cure. Rain threw
a curve ball and forced the matches to be split between
venues. The JV would contest on the old middle school
field while the varsity would stay on the hastily repair
pitch.
The Junior Varsity back
at the old middle school found plenty of grass and little
mud. The scene was set for a nice early evening of soccer.
Starters were keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor
Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart;
midfielders Anne Hippler, Samantha Barwick, Sarah Ramsey,
Kyrstin Warnimont, and strikers Abby Ternasky and Brennen
Hoptonstall. Listing the substitutes, none
Logan Elm was ready and
looking for a good soccer brawl. Speed was their plan,
play it long and let two fast strikers do the damage.
Good plan but not good enough, possession was key and
the Indians had the Braves locked up. Abby Ternasky
scored the Indians first with a lightening run up the
left side. Katelyn Issing nabbed the second Indian tally
sending in a rebound. Sarah Ramsey working combinations
inside to Taylor Thome got the ball just in time to
fill the onion bag for an Indian lead, 3-1. In the second
half Brennen Hoptonstall scored twice to cement the
victory and bring the JV record up to 11-1-3.
While fans, trainer,
officials made the trek to the football field the Indians
focused on making the evening a pleasant senior night
and “Shoot for the Cure”. The pitch was
repaired but still retained great volumes of water.
Footing would be an issue all night for both squads.
Seniors Heather Linn
and Whit McDonald were introduced with their parents
while exchange student Jessica Gabral was escorted by
her sponsors. Their careers with Canal Winchester soccer
were winding down; last regular season contest and tournament
were all that is left.
Starting line up named
Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper,
Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen,
Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and Lauren
Tolman.
The first three minutes
produced the game winner. Heather Linn tossed in a throw
to Whit McDonald as she broke past the Brave defender.
Whit cut in towards goal and launched a bending in swinger
that nestled in the net for the game winner. Everyone
could have gone home then and missed some fun for the
Indian faith full.
Four minutes later a
strong attack drove the ball into the box. Initially
parried away the Braves did not grab possession; Mac
Harper did and punished the flopping keeper with a dead
on finish, 2-0 Indians.
The action was heavy
in Logan Elm’s end. Time and time again the Indians
would wrest away possession and attack. Emilie Lance,
Ama Winland, Amber Walcott and Kacy Allen initiated
counter attacks with well placed balls to the feet of
advancing mids. In one action Taylor Tackett fought
her way into the box to launch a shot, a desperate save
sent the ball rebounding out to Katie Hahn. Kate’s
touched knocked the sphere into the net for a 3-0 lead.
The duo reversed the
action a few minutes later. In perhaps the best example
of the effectiveness of a deep run, Taylor Tackett at
full speed headed towards the line held by the Braves.
Katie Hahn’s pass found Taylor at full stride
in on the keeper. Taylor calmly chipped it over the
charging keeper for a 4 -0 lead.
A frigid crew of Indians
headed for the warmth of the locker room. Instructions
were simple, keep on the pressure and preserve the shut
out.
A constant stream of
fresh Indians was more then the Braves could handle.
While hard fought with both teams leaving no effort
on the bench; the Braves only generated one shot on
goal the entire evening.
Whit McDonald capped
off the evening with the final two goals. The first
was set up by Jordan Guiler’s tough work on the
right flank. Jordan dispossessed a gaggle of Braves
and found Whit lurking near the box. Jordan’s
pass set up Whit’s finish, and a 5-0 lead. The
last score of the evening was all Whitney McDonald.
Whit stole the ball juking and jiving her way into the
penalty area. Whit’s shot offered no chance to
the Brave keeper and topped off the evening the final
score 6-0 Indians.
Lauren Tolman ended the
evening with a shut out and only one save.
Canal Winchester’s
varsity record stands 9-5-2 with the JV carrying 11-1-3.
The JV will play Bexley away on Saturday October 17,
5:30 PM.
October 10, 2009
Canal Winchester 1 Fisher Catholic 1
The sun was coming up
shiny and the pitch although different was firm. The
opponents assembled on the old middle school field to
contest. Gators brought benches, trainers found the
field, crowds assembled and for a change the varsity
was given the opening match.
Saturday’s starters
included Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie
Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy
Allen, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and
Lauren Tolman.
Fisher Catholic had a
new look, new coach and was seeking some identity at
the Indians expense. The first 40 minutes were give
and take with the majority of the match contested in
Fisher’s end. Shots were fired but none punished
either keeper. That all changed in the 33 minute. An
adjusted striker tandem was ensconced up front. Jessica
Gabral and Taylor Tackett were plying their trade and
looking dangerous. No sooner had these two worthies
enter the match when Katie Hahn sent in a kick from
the left side. Jessica gathered in the ball and shed
her defender to create a seam to the back of the net.
That was all Jessica needed scorching in a low burner
that only stopped in the net; Canal Winchester 1 Fisher
zip.
The Indians plan for
the second 40 minutes was to continue tough defense,
push up a central marking back to link with the offense
and to get the very next goal. All seemed set when it
was discovered that team captain and leading scorer
Whit McDonald was carrying a leg strain. Her contributions
would be missed in the second half.
After a quick adjustment
the Indians went hard after Fisher, 8 shot were ripped
on goal but all ended up in Michelle Wellstead’s
hands. The game waned on with the Indians in control
but not increasing their lead. In the final 2 minutes
a cruel trick was played on the Indians. Fisher continued
to play a ball after it had crossed the end line. Out
of position the official never noticed how far out it
was and let play continue, the resultant shot from Emily
Shumaker nicked Amber Walcott’s leg and slipped
in to tie the match. To say the least the Indians were
hot but to no avail, a cruel trick had been played.
Lauren Tolman ended the
afternoon with 3 saves.
The junior Varsity was
left the task of removing a bad taste from all Indian
faith full in a rematch with Amanda Clearcreek The starting
line up was back to full strength with the exception
of Anna Hippler who reported in sick from home. Starters
were keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn
Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart; midfielders
Caitie Traylor, Samantha Barwick, Sarah Ramsey, Kyrstin
Warnimont, and strikers Abby Ternasky and Brennen Hoptonstall.
Once again varsity players Caitie Traylor and Andrea
Ratliff volunteered for double duty.
A spirited match insured
with the Indians prevailing for their 10th victory.
The game winner came as Abby Ternasky scored the first
of her two tallies. She was followed by Brennen Hoptonstall
and Catie Traylor who rounded out the 4-0 half time
score.
Canal Winchester’s
varsity record stands 8-5-2 with the JV carrying 10-1-2.
A home match with Logan Elm and senior night is up next,
Thursday 7:15 PM, October 15. The JV will play at Columbus
Academy on Tuesday starting 5 PM and Logan Elm on Thursday
at 5:30 PM.
The Indians will start
the tournament away playing Westerville South, October
22 7 PM.
October 8, 2009
Canal Winchester 1 Teays Valley 4
A good solid match awaited
both squads as they bounced over the highways of Ohio.
A chance to grab the MSL title was in the offering;
a worthy goal for all to aspire.
The JV mugs jumped right
on the idea of a victory. The “bug” now
had incapacitated two stalwarts, missing were Sarah
Ramsey and Brennen Hoptonstall. Every one else took
the field plus varsity players Caitie Traylor and Andrea
Ratliff ; rounding it all out was keeper Savanna Daily,
defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd
and Brianna Meinhart; midfielders Anna Hippler, Kyrstin
Warnimont, and strikers Abby Ternasky and Samantha Barwick.
Caitie Traylor punched in the 2 goals needed for a victory.
The JV record stands at 9-1-2.
The varsity match began
after senior night for 9 Teays seniors. To add a sparkle
to the event lots of rain kept the field shimmering.
The regular starters
were present for the match even with some gutting it
out with the after effects of “bug’. Whitney
McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica
Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland,
Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.
Practice was focused
on several breakdowns troubling the Indians. When facing
a fast quick opponent; mark even tighter contesting
the first touch give no cushion, don’t let them
turn, don’t dive in stay in front and contain.
Remember goal side means you are in front not behind
or next; this has cost us 6 goals in the last games
and 2 more tonight. The Indians attack often ends up
unbalanced in front of the goal, needed is width in
front of goal. The team is missing many chances that
hard work has created. Pass to beat head on pressure
and angle play to side to move sweeper. Team was asked
to accept only their best.
The first period was
a tough match with each team getting some chances; it
turned sour for the Indians in the 38 minute. A foul
awarded to the Vikings’ resembled a corner kick.
The Indians have proved good at clearing away corner
kicks. The sloppy pitch added an element that did the
Indians in, poor footing worked against the first clear.
Viking Katie Saha knocked in a low squigglier that slipped
through a load of legs and feet to slide under a diving
Lauren Tolman. Now the Indians had to chase the match.
The first period had
gone well except for one play. The Indians were confident
they could over come this set back and earn a victory.
Six minutes into the second half the same play that
had trouble the Indians came back and bit them in the
gluteus maximus. Tough play worked the ball deep against
the Indians end line; the cross found “a look
out she comes’ mark” on Megan Zealer. Megan
wasted no time in putting in the game winner.
Now the Indians were
chasing 2 goals. The chase was shortened when Canal’s
Katie Hahn in a play that resembled the Vikings first
goal punished Emily Kuehn to bring it back to 1-2. Hope
was shot lived; one minute later the Vikings earned
back a 2 goal lead. Laura Scott knocked in a tally.
Miranda Wilkins closed out the affair with her score,
1-4 Vikings.
Lauren Tolman ended the
evening with 7 saves and Alex Cremeans had 2. Canal
Winchester’s record stands 8-5-1. A home match
with Fisher Catholic is up next, Saturday 1 PM, October
10. The JV will play Amanda Clearcreek’s JV following
the varsity at 3 PM. Due to the weather both matches
will be played on the old middle school football field.
October 6, 2009
Canal Winchester 2 Wellington 5
The worthy Indians squad
headed off to Upper Arlington and Wellington School.
Awaiting them were a new infill artificial field and
some covered benches, glad for the covers as the rain
was present all night long.
The youngsters improved
their record with a solid performance against Wellington’s
JV. Some what depleted by the “bug” an adjusted
line up took the field: keeper Savanna Daily, defenders
Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna
Meinhart; four midfielders Sarah Ramsey, Andy Ratliff,
Anna Hippler, Kyrstin Warnimont, with strikers Abby
Ternasky and Samantha Barwick. To make sure enough players
were available varsity players Caitie Traylor and Andrea
Ratliff split the halves. The match was evenly contested
except that the Indians scored 2 goals, compliments
of Anna Hippler and Caitie Traylor. The JV record stands
at 8-1-2.
The late addition began
well but ended poorly. The Indians never mastered the
speed of the field but poor play was the reason for
a less then glorious result. The opening of the match
found the usual cast of characters prowling the pith
with the exception of Kacy Allen who was captured by
the “bug’: Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett,
Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie
Hahn, Alex Cremeans, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie
Lance and Lauren Tolman.
The first half ended
in a draw and the Indians had every reason to believe
that they could prevail. One of the best attacks of
the season occurred early in the second period. The
Indians absconded with the ball; Taylor Tackett zipped
up the pitch, spotting Mac Harper on a run to the middle
between the sweeper and a central defender. The ball
was played to Mac who then hit Whit McDonald on a back
post overlap. Whit punished the keeper with a tally;
1-0 Indians.
The Indians had hardly
settled down when the first of 5 similar plays punished
Canal. Each time a hard run down the flank put the ball
against the end line. More times then it was enjoyable
the cross was met by a Jaguar attacker who finished
the play, 1-5 Wellington. Adjustments went for naught.
The last bright spot was a late goal by Whit McDonald
but the Indians were soundly thrashed 2-5.
Canal Winchester’s
record stands 8-4-1. An away match against Teays Valley
for the MSL championship is up next, Tuesday 7:15 PM,
October 8. The JV will also be traveling to Teays Valley
playing a 5:30 PM match.
October 1, 2009
Canal Winchester 3 Fairfield Union 0
Two bus loads of Indians
ventured out in search of victory. One headed north
to Worthington Christian School and the other east to
Fairfield Union.
The youthful Indians
scrambled off the bus rushing the pitch with keeper
Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing,
Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart. Four midfielders Sarah
Ramsey, Anna Hippler, Kyrstin Warnimont, Samantha Barwick
with Abby Ternasky and Brennen Hoptonstall playing up
front. One varsity player made the trip as well to shore
up the juniors; Caitie Traylor was sent to make sure
victory was secure. The Indian’s coterie wasted
no time pulling the brass rings with a three nil victory.
Anna Hippler had two tallies and Sarah Ramsey gathered
the other. After suffering defeat in Grandville vanquishing
Worthington Christian righted the canoe. The JV record
stands at 7-1-2.
The Coonpath crew found
the new Fairfield Union high School and the old field.
Opening the event were Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett,
Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie
Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie
Lance and Lauren Tolman.
Shots were fired, crosses
made, hard runs into the final third but again the hot
shooting horde miss fired and let the Falcons off the
perch. Soon the entire aviary was circling in the penalty
box daring the Indians to score. The Indians were happy
to oblige but it took 27 minutes to realize a result.
Pushing hard Whit McDonald snaked the sphere from a
Falcon (unsafe at any speed) and ripped it to the space
just in front of a rumbling Taylor Tackett. Taylor kicked
in her over drive and raced into the box, bang the game
was over. Taylor’s tally was the game winner,
Indians 1 – Falcons zip.
The first stanza was
spoken with out benefit of further scores. The Indians
allowed that touch passing would be the key to unravel
the knot of Falcons camping in front of the box.
The storm clouds were
gathering as the half kicked off. An ill wind was blowing
towards the Falcon goal. Fifteen minutes in Katie Hahn
decided if you can’t shoot through the crowd shoot
over. After ripping the ball away Katie cut in clearing
the crowd in hot pursuit. She launched a long bending
ball that settled in the net to crush the Falcon sprit;
Indians 2 Fairfield Union a big zero.
The Indians planned on
playing every one fit each half getting ready for the
play offs. The bench resembled a revolving door with
fresh folks running in and out. Immediately after one
switch, Jordan Guiler isolated herself on the left side.
Gaining separation from her defender Jordan whipped
a ball across the box; Jessica Cabral pounced and rocketed
a shot to the net, 3-0.
The match ended with
Indian keeper Lauren Tolman making 5 saves and earning
a shout out. Jessica Gabral stands as the leading point
getter, with 8 goals and 4 assists; Mackenzie Harper
is right behind with 8 goals and 3 assists and so is
Whit McDonald who has 7 goals and 5 assists.
Canal Winchester’s
record stands 8-3-1. An away match against Wellington
is up next, Tuesday 7:15 PM, October 6. The JV will
also be traveling to Wellington playing a 5:30 PM match.
September 24, 2009
Canal Winchester 2 Circleville 2
A soft Irish day
greeted the Indian faithful, and then it turned to just
plan old rain. The Tigers of Circleville were coming
to town for a good old fashion soccer match. In the
golden age of radio the Tigers won all the matches but
since the dawn of rap (not sure it's spelled correctly)
it’s been tightly played draw matches.
The Junior Varsity assigned
the opening act thumped Columbus Academy. The squad
taking the pitch was keeper Savanna Daily, defenders
Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna
Meinhart. Four midfielders Sarah Ramsey, Anna Hippler,
Kyrstin Warnimont, Samantha Barwick with Abby Ternasky
and Brennen Hoptonstall playing up front. Early on it
was obvious that the Vikings were out match. The Indians
scored 9 goals: Abby Ternasky 3, Anna Hippler, Brennen
Hoptonstall 2, Sarah Ramsey, Samantha Barwick and Katelyn
Issing. The last 10 minutes the Indians played with
8 field players. On Tuesday September 22, the Junior
Varsity tied a match with Pickerington Central, 2-2.
The JV record stands at 6-0-2.
The main event was on
and starting tonight were Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett,
Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie
Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie
Lance and Lauren Tolman.
The match started strong
for the Indians. Early attacks were filled with quick
aggressive passes, hard runs and strong challenges that
demanded a goal but not were offered. Possession was
all Indians as the Tigers were having trouble penetrating
the Indian final third. An opportunity to bury the Tigers
was at hand but not realized.
Eighteen minutes in Ashley
Walcott in combination with Jenna Zuberi and Whit McDonald
sent Rachel Monsour into space on the left flank. Rachel
worked her way to the end line, blocked by a Tiger defender
Rachel cut back and ripped a cross in to Whit McDonald.
Whit drilled the ball to the back of the net, 1-0 Indians.
The Indian attack was
relentless but unfruitful; the cruelty of soccer was
demonstrated in the 32nd minute. The Tigers had the
ball deep on the right side and under pressure. The
resultant cross found the Indian defense over shifted
with out midfield support; Jenna Grunden received the
cross for a one touch finish, 1-1.
The half ended with the
Indians retreating to the small comfort of the locker
room. The plan was simple keep up the pressure and finish
the chances, the Indians were out shooting the Tigers
7 to 4 at this point.
The second period was
as hard as the rain; both teams were playing with reckless
abandon. The momentum shifted dramatically to the Tigers
when they repeated the play that lead to their first
goal. The Tigers were back working the right side and
managed to send in a cross to the top of the 6, again
Jenna Grunden was present to beat the defenders for
a 1-2 lead with only 9 minutes to play. All the outstanding
work by the Indians seemed for naught.
The Indians quickly shifted
to three strikers pulling up Kacy Allen form the back.
Additionally Mackenzie Harper and Jessica Gabral went
into the game. Four minutes later the additional attackers
paid off. After several brilliant runs by Taylor Tackett
to keep the Indians in the Tiger final third, Canal's
chance came again. Playing off a corner kick the Indians
swarmed the goal; as the ball skidded to the back side
Mac Harper knocked it in to even the match. Both squads
had one more good chance to grab a victory but alas
none was in the offering, the victory bell remained
silent.
The match ended with
Indian keeper Lauren Tolman making 7 saves. Mackenzie
Harper stands as the leading point getter, with 8 goals
and 3 assists; Whit McDonald is right behind with 7
goals and 4 assists.
Canal Winchester’s
record stands 7-3-1. An away match against Fairfield
Union is up next, Thursday 6 PM, October 1.
The JV added a mid week
game and will travel to Grandville for a 5:30 PM match
on Tuesday, September 29. The JV will also be traveling
October 1 to Worthington Christian School playing a
5 PM match.

Canal Winchester 3 Bloom Carroll 1
Excitement was in the
air the Bloom Carroll Bulldogs were coming to town.
Nothing better then a crystal clear night, a good pitch
and a worthy opponent to get the blood flowing.
The Junior Varsity opened
the evening with a resounding victory. The squad taking
the pitch was keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor
Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart.
Four midfielders Sarah Ramsey, Jenna Zuberi, Kyrstin
Warnimont, Samantha Barwick with Abby Ternasky and Brennen
Hoptonstall playing up front. Three goals were registered
this night, two from Brennen Hoptonstall and Abby Ternasky’s
one. The JV record stands at 5-0-1. The JV has not conceded
a single goal this season.
Now for the main event,
additional line up fine tuning was accomplished after
the Indians’ victory over Liberty Union. Starting
tonight were Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie
Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy
Allen, Ama Winland, Alexandria Cremeans, Emilie Lance
and Lauren Tolman.
Participating in a soccer
community food drive night the Indian faithful were
hungry for some action. The Indians used a high dittle
dittle down the middle attach to punish the Bulldogs.
Two minutes in Jessica Gabral smoked her defender and
sent the sphere Mackenzie Harper’s way, Mac loped
in cut back and sent her cross to the front of the net.
Jessica Gabral improving her position was running hard
to the back post, one touch later Jessica headed the
Indians into the lead.
The rest of the first
period was missed opportunity for the Indians. The attack
was strong but results were not. Bloom’s keeper
Monica Cruz made several excellent saves keeping her
pack in the game. Kristen Smith jumped in and drew the
Bulldogs even with a strong finish to a mediocre clearance
attempt by the Indians back four. Normally emphatic
with their touches, on this occasion the Indians were
playing pin ball with Kristen getting the last touch.
The first period ended 1 – 1; another tough scrappy
match with Bloom what did you expect?
The talk focused on a
few facts, continue the strong play, look for rebounds
from the Bulldog keeper Monica Cruz, move the ball to
feet and enjoy the rest of the night.
The game winner came
12 minutes into the second half. Strong pressure had
again earned the Indians a corner kick. A looping ball
was sent across by Katie Hahn, the scrum in front of
the goal knocked it out to the back post and Whitney
McDonald. Whit advanced to the near post and rifled
the ball to the net, Indians 2 and Bloom uno.
The Bulldogs were yapping
and fired up. It was now or never for their dreams and
they threw 3 strikers into the fray. So sad for the
Bulldogs, Andrea Ratliff (the birthday girl) calmed
them down as did Kacy Allen, Amber Walcott and Emilie
Lance. Acting as the Dog Whisperers, the Indians took
away all Bulldog treats.
The Indians closed the
door on the proceedings in the final 8 minutes. Gathering
up a throw in center midfield Jenna Zuberi cut around
the defensive pressure worked her way into the penalty
box where she punished Monica, 3-1 Indians. Hasta la
vista Bulldogs.
The match ended with
Indian keeper Lauren Tolman making four saves. Jessica
Gabral stands as the leading point getter, with 7 goals
and 4 assists; Mackenzie Harper is right behind with
7 goals and 3 assists.
Canal Winchester’s
record stands 7-3-0. A home match against Circleville
is up next, Thursday 5:30 PM, September 24 for JV and
7:15 PM for varsity.
The JV added a mid week
game and will travel to Pickerington Central for a 5:30
PM match on Tuesday, September 22.
September 15, 2009
Canal Winchester 10 Liberty Union 2
A full bus headed
off to Baltimore. All were excited anticipating some
good Maryland crab cakes alas the trip was shorter then
expected and all the Indians found were soy beans.
Adjustments were made
to the Indian attack. Eleven took the pitch but no longer
in a 4-3-3. A switch was made to a 4-4-2, responding
to a 1-3 record in the last 4 games. The revamped starting
line up had Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie
Harper, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Andrea Ratliff, Amber
Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren
Tolman.
The Indians were happy
to participate in the inaugural girl’s soccer
season for the Liberty Union Lions. As it turned out
the Lions played hard but were bagged by the Indians.
In the first 10 minutes the Indians looked like the
tribe that could not shoot straight. Plenty of chances
were earned but none punished the Lions. That all changed
in the 11th minute. Whitney McDonald sent in a corner
kick, Mackenzie Harper grabbed the ball and attacked.
Mac whipped in a shot and the scoreless game was broken
open.
Eight minutes later Jenna
Zuberi working the middle spotted Jessica Cabral in
a hole in the Lion defense, pushing the ball in set
up Jessica’s shot, as quick as that the score
was 2-0. The Lions responded a few minutes later. Working
the ball up the left side, the Lions fired in a cross.
A few Indians tried to knock the ball away but Tori
Holstein got there first and poked it across; 2-1 Canal
Winchester.
The Lion tally fired
up the Indian attack. Thirty four minutes in Whitney
McDonald slalomed her way through the Lion defense and
ripped the net with a blast, 3-1 Indians. The net had
hardly stopped ruffling when Whit spotted Taylor Tackett
busting up the right side. Whit put the ball to Taylor’s
foot, who wacked it past a lunging keeper, 4-1 Indians.
Three minutes later Taylor assisted in the final tally
of the half. Working out to the flank, Taylor set a
cross into Mackenzie Harper who one touch the ball into
the back of the net. The first half ended with the Indians
up 5-1.
The second period was
a copy of the first. The dust was hardly stirring when
Mackenzie Harper spied Whit McDonald breaking to goal
in the middle. Mac laid it in and Whit punished the
Lions, 6-1. The fans had hardly settled back in their
seats when Mackenzie Harper was set up by Heather Lind.
Heather fired in a cross for Mac’s two touch into
the goal.
The next two scores were
generated by Ashley Walcott feeding Rachel Monsour who
did what she likes to do best, beat the keeper. The
duo only needed two minutes to run the score board up
to 9-1.
The Lions responded after
a foul was whistled against Caitie Traylor in the box.
Caitie was playing tough and harshly treated by the
official. A yellow card was given to the entire Indian
team for verbally pointing out to the official that
his view was not shared by all. A penalty kick was given
and Lauren Benson was able to catch Alex Cremeans diving
right sending her shot left, cutting the margin 9-2.
Heather Lind set up the
final tally, finding Jessica Cabral working the middle.
Heather’s cross was tapped in by Jessica for the
final goal. The match ended with an Indian 10-2 victory.
The Lions were game but out matched. Keepers Lauren
Tolman and Alex Cremeans each recorded a save.
Canal Winchester’s
record stands 6-3-0. A home match against Bloom Carroll
is up next, Thursday 5:30 PM, September 15 for JV and
7:15 PM for varsity.

Canal Winchester 0 Lancaster 1
A beautiful Saturday afternoon greeted the Indian faithful
for a spirited match with the Gales of Lancaster.
The Junior Varsity continued
their mastery of opponents, whipping the junior Gales
5-0. Brennen Hoptonstall, Sarah Ramsey twice, Sami Barwick,
Katelyn Issing all ripped the Gales net. The down side
was an injury to Anna Hippler who popped her knee and
ended up on crutches.
The varsity came on with
Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour, Taylor Tackett, Heather
Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen,
Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.
Two loses out of last
three matches had the Indians smarting. Grimly determined
to right the ship the Indians came out battling. The
first period began to have a familiar look. The attach
was putting players in on goal with wonderful chances
to score but again ground snakes, wood work and soaring
balls kept the Gales net immaculate. The Gales answered
with booming shots that did not trouble Indian keeper
Loran Tolman.
In the second period
was “same oh same oh”. Indians attacks were
like ripe plumbs on a branch with no one around to pluck
them. Disaster struck in the 70th minute; the yellow
shirts spotted something and awarded the Gales free
kick out side the 18. Raven Frances lined up and sent
a loping ball to towards goal, a quick shove later Zaneta
Block sent the ball and Lauren Tolman into the net.
The Indians fought back but to no avail. The loss was
a bitter pill to swallow.
Canal Winchester’s
record stands 5-3-0. Liberty Union is up next, Tuesday
5:30 PM, September 15. Match location is Liberty Union
Elementary, 1000 S. Main St., Baltimore.

The
Indians headed south for a match with the Aces.
The Junior Varsity took
the field and promptly ran up a big victory, 9 -0 over
the junior Aces. Tallies were accounted for by Sami
Barwick, Abby Ternasky, Brennan Hoptonstall, Anna Hippler,
Catie Traylor, Brianna Meinhart and the Aces helped
by scoring 3 for the Indians.
The varsity started the
evening with Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour, Taylor
Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi, Amber
Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren
Tolman on the pitch.
The Indian scheme was
apply high pressure and make sure we watched the Smith
girls. Offensively the plan was to eliminate wasted
chances, cashing in instead. The Indians knew they could
play the Aces step for step but it would be a close
match and goals precious.
The first period lived
up to its billing. A tough physical game was under way.
The Aces enjoyed pushing forward with the Indians responding.
Several chances went by the board; the Aces’ wood
work did yeoman’s work in defending the goal.
Shots bounced off the post or were sent high. Close
but no cigar and the missed chances would haunt the
Indians. The half ended the way it started, nil-nil.
In the second period
the game winner came off of a hard run into the left
corner by Smith. Battling every step was Emilie Lance.
Scrapping for the ball Emilie was shoved to the ground;
Smithy took a few steps and worked a shot in from the
end line.
Getting the important
1-0 lead; the Aces iced the match with a quick counter
attack off of an Indian corner kick, once again Smithy
did the damage sending in the second tally to close
out the scoring. The anticipation of a score sent all
but 2 Indian defenders up looking for a chance. Even
Steven at the midfield line proved to be costly; there
was only 15 minutes to make up two goals. The score
board read 0-2 and constant heavy Indian attaches could
not change the out come. A grumpy bunch of Indians headed
north.
Canal Winchester’s
record stands 5-2-0. A Saturday match versus Lancaster
is up next, September 12.

Canal Winchester 4 Zane Trace 1
The final bell had barely rung when the Indians loaded
the bus for a trip south, destination Zane Trace. The
Indians were prepared to treat the Zane Trace Pioneers
rough.
The Junior Varsity wasted
no time in the preliminary match; Samantha Barwick scored
the matches only tally in the first few minutes just
ahead of the thunder. After several restarts of the
30 minute delay clock the match was ended with an Indian
victory.
The weather cleared sufficiently
to start the varsity match only 5 minutes late. Starters
this night included Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour,
Taylor Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi,
Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance
and Lauren Tolman.
The Indian scheme was
to take away space and to not miss any opportunities
in front of goal. The plan worked after the first 4
minutes. A few great opportunities went by the board
before a free kick was given to the Pioneers. Holding
a high line the Indians saw Megan Jaruwannakorn break
on the kick and race towards goal. She took a touch
and zipped the sphere in passed a diving Lauren Tolman;
Zane Trace 1 the Indians de nada.
The next 30 minutes demonstrated
that the Indians could earn great opportunities with
little result. That all changed in the 35 minute, an
Indian corner kick sent the ball to the box, Zane Trace
half heartily cleared it but only as far as Rachel Monsour’s
feet. Rachel blasted in three shots; two were sent straight
back to her but not the final shot. The match stood
even.
The last 2 minutes of
the half provided the game winner. Taylor Tackett working
the right side fought her way into the top of the 18.
Taylor sent in a big bending ball that eluded the Pioneers
best efforts for a score. The half ended with a 2-1
Indian lead.
Icing on the cake arrived
only 7 minutes into the second period. Whitney McDonald
rumbled up the middle slipping past defenders like a
banana peal. Whit did not waste her shot and finished
off the Pioneers with an unassisted tally for a 3-1
lead. Ten minutes latter the attacking combination of
McKenzie Harper and Jessica Cabral pushed into the final
1/3 pulling apart the Zane Trace defenders. Jessica’s
touch to McKenzie for a shot ended the scoring.
The score board read
4-1 and a stout Indian defense would insure it stayed
that way. Serious tough play kept the Zane Trace faithful
unhappy with the result. Time and time again Indians
raced in to disrupt any chance the pioneers could muster.
Anticipating play the Indians arrived to nick the ball
away and start a counter attack. Six rotating mids out
worked the center of the Pioneer attack: Katie Hahn,
Heather Lind, Ashley Walcott, Jenna Zuberi, Caitie Traylor,
Kaleigh Delong, Jordan Guiler and Kyrstin Warnimont
did the heavy work. The back four allowed very limited
opportunities reflected in keeper Lauren Tolman’s
2 saves. Amber Walcott, Emilie lance, Ama Winland, Kacy
Allen, Alex Cremeans and Andrea Ratliff matched the
Zane Trace strikers stride for stride stifling all opportunities.
Canal Winchester’s
record stands 5-1-0. Next up is undefeated Amanda Clearcreek,
Thursday September 10. A 4:15 PM bus departure is scheduled
from CWHS with both the varsity and JV.

Canal Winchester 2 Jonathan Alter 4
The Indians traveled
out over hill and dale to play matches with the Pioneers
of Jonathan Alter. The JV match went peachy a nice 6-0
win for the Indians. Alas the second match with a very
promising start ended up in ignominious defeat. A bitter
taste not experienced this season until today.
The team taking the pitch
was familiar to all the Indian faithful; Whitney McDonald,
Rachel Monsour, Taylor Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie
Hahn, Jena Zuberi, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland,
Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.
The Indians knew the
Pioneer attackers were formidable and bore extra watching,
especially Chaska Yoder. Chaska is a very active and
hard working striker with excellent ball skills. The
plan was to make our chances pay while challenging every
ball played in towards the Indian goal.
The Indians struck first
Jessica Gabral with combination play set up by good
midfield defense worked her way to the left. A strong
cross set up McKenzie Harper for the first tally of
the match.
The next nine minutes
presented opportunities for both sides to push in a
goal but all chances went wasted. Jessica again worked
some magic and touched Whitney McDonald through with
good angle to goal. Whit wasted no time thundering in
cutting around the keeper tapping in the score for an
Indian 2-0 lead.
Possession was in favor
the final minutes of the first stanza but Indian attacks
came up empty.
Expecting a strong push
by the pioneers a quick Indian team was sent out to
start the second period. A simple task was given, get
goal number three and finish the Pioneers. Fate was
not kind; Chaska Yoder again proved why it’s reasonable
to respect her skills. She orchestrated 4 unanswered
goals; scoring 2 while getting help from Alexis Milesky
and Nikki McGrew.
Analysis of the match
points to several areas the Indians will need to improve.
Recognition of an unbalanced defense and where to apply
help. Often a single marking back attempted to slow
an attack with no cover offered or coming from others.
Two, playing possession when the heat is turned up,
is a better answer then long balls or sprints to goal
with out support. Lastly, emulating Chaska’s striker
play; she anticipated, sprinted and fought for every
ball cleared by the Pioneer defense.
Keeper Lauren Tolman
made 9 saves. Canal Winchester’s record stands
4-1-0. Next up is Zane Trace, Tuesday September 8. A
3:45 PM bus departure is scheduled from CWHS with both
the varsity and JV.

Canal Winchester 7 Hamilton Township 0
A big bright moon
shined on the Indians this night. Out of Sync tones
rolled through the stadium as the Indian squad prepared
for a match with Hamilton Township Rangers. The Indians
were prepared for a brawl.
A worthy first team took
the pitch comprising Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour,
Taylor Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi,
Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance
and Lauren Tolman.
The plan was simple eliminate
mistakes and make crosses count, striving for a higher
level of performance.
Not all the over flow
crowd had taken their seat when the Indians struck.
The Ranger kick off was stolen and a couple of touches
later found Heather Lind on the door step , the Ranges
were kind enough to leave it open and Heather obliged,
game winner was in under thirty seconds.
Taking it hard the Rangers
scrapped to keep the roof from falling in. Jackie Moore
Hamilton’s keeper pulled the bacon from the fire
for the next 30 minutes. All play was in the Indians’
final third but shot after shot was sent away. The entire
team had entered the match but to no avail. The score
would have been high were the Indians in a horse shoe
match were close counts.
Time proved that not
all good things last, with eight minutes to go Heather
Lind played combination ball and worked her way to the
end line. Heather spied Rachel Monsour lurking between
the 18 and 6 yard box. Heather’s delivery was
on the money and so was Rachel’s shot, 2-0 Indians.
Two minutes later Heather repeated her passing prowess
with Katie Hahn the beneficiary. Katie collected her
pass and one touched the sphere into the back of the
net. The net had not cooled down when Rachel Monsour
dispossessed a Ranger defender, the race was on. Rachel
zipped in on goal sending the keeper one way while the
ball went the other, 3-0. Rachel was now trying on hats
for size to see if maybe one would fit.
The game clocked showed
less then 2 minutes left in the first half. Anna Hippler
playing as the left midfield worker her way up to the
top of the 18; cutting back Anna left her defender on
her hip clearing a nice lane into Rachel Monsour. Once
again the Rangers were punished with Rachel bagging
her third goal for the evening, Indians 5 - Hamilton
0.
A keeper change was made
to start the second period. Alex Cremeans went in for
Lauren Tolman. The remaining starters re-entered the
game. The plan was to push hard at keeping played balls
on the ground. Its to easy to blast it forward when
a team believes the going will be easy, the goal was
to create deliberate dangerous plays with the Ranger
goal surrounded.
The Indians played like
their hair was on fire. There was no respite given to
a tired Ranger crew. Great chances came and went; the
big constant for the Ranges was keeper Jackie Moore.
She recorded 18 saves for the evening. Alas for Jackie
all her good work would not keep Jessica Cabral at bay.
Only 15 minutes remain when Jessica struck. Jenna Zuberi
operating as center striker sucked the defense in and
laid the ball off to Jessica for an easy tally. That
was number 6 for an Indian celebration. The last score
of the night was fun to watch. Jessica playing with
her back to the goal popped the ball over head, spun
and tapped in goal number 7 for the evening.
During the run of play
the Rangers were unable to generate a single shot on
goal. They certainly tried but the Indian defense smothered
all opportunities. Mention must go to Heather Lind,
Katie Hahn, Jenna Zuberi, Catie Traylor, Ashley Wolcott,
Kaleigh Delong, Kyrstin Warnimont, Anna Hippler, Amber
Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance, Alex
Cremeans, Andrea Ratliff and Megan Byrd. The midfield
and backs were unrelenting in applying pressure.
Keepers Lauren Tolman
and Alex Cremeans never got a chance to make a save.
Canal Winchester’s record stands 4-0-0. Next up
is Jonathan Alter pioneers, Saturday September 5.

Canal Winchester 3 Lakewood 0
The shifting sands
of time threw the worthy Indians off kilter and this
reporter, Harry Head as well. Anticipating a leisurely
drive to Hebron and a 7:15 pm game start I had to scramble
and rely on my trusty red power Para-glider to reach
the match in time.
The starters included
a trio of strikers Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour
and Taylor Tackett midfielders Heather Lind, Katie Hahn,
and Jena Zuberi. Seeking a shut out were Amber Walcott,
Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, and Emilie Lance. Lauren Tolman
stared into the sun guarding the 24 foot cavern.
The instructions for
the match stressed improved crosses, filling the dangerous
areas and touch. The field has a bit of a crown, a little
narrow with a few bumps. The pitch will temp you to
blast long balls but balls played to feet work best.
Lastly as always take away the attackers space.
Seven minutes had elapsed
when heavy pressure on the Lancer’s goal paid
off. Taylor Tackett pounced on an errant pass and ripped
in towards net. She froze the keeper then heated her
up again with a torch for the tally. The game winner
was up on the board.
Four minutes later. Taylor
Tackett made another strong diagonal run into the left
corner with Lancers in hot pursuit. A quick cut back
allowed Taylor to work her way towards the middle. Spotting
Katie Hahn angling hard to the goal Taylor sent the
ball to Katie’s feet. Katie sent it into the net,
2 nil Indians.
A second wave of Indians
entered the fray and proved to be just as lethal as
the earlier crew. The change of pace added by Jessica
Cabral, Mackenzie Harper, Catie Traylor, Ashley Wolcott
and Kaleigh Delong kept the action in the final third.
Time and time again well placed shots manage to just
drift by a post or top of the net. One shot parried
out by the Lancer keeper Jessie Lewis earned an Indian’s
corner kick. Whit McDonald ripped in a bending ball
just over Lewis reach. A swarm of Indians crashed the
goal box. Taylor Tackett’s first shot hit the
under side of the top bar, Mackenzie Harper’s
touch sent it a smidgen farther and the goal was tallied.
The half ended with the Indians ahead 3-0.
The Lancer’s came
out poking pushing the attack out of their final third
to the middle of the field. Every back that made the
trip earned top honors for stomping out each foray with
flair. The defense of Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama
Winland, Emilie Lance, Alex Cremeans, Andrea Ratliff
and Megan Byrd never bent or wavered. The defense was
so thorough that keeper Lauren Tolman was begging to
get a save or two. In fact that was all she got, two.
One was a beauty, the only time the Lancers really threatened
2 minutes were left in the contest. A Lancer shot on
goal was swept off the line by Lauren's diving stretching
reach, the ball was then cleared by Alex Cremeans.
Keeper Lauren Tolman
registered 2 saves in the teams first shut out of the
season. Canal Winchester’s record stands 3-0-0.
Next up is Hamilton Township, Thursday September 3.

Canal Winchester 4 Whetstone 1
Saturday brought a bright sunny afternoon, clearing
away the lightening that ended Friday night’s
the 100 year celebration. The Bexley’s football
squad was replaced by the Whetstone Braves girls soccer
team, the result would be the same; the pealing of the
victory bell.
The starters for the match included front runners Whitney
McDonald, Mackenzie Harper and Taylor Tackett. An active
and solid midfield of Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, and
Jena Zuberi backed up by a stingy Amber Walcott, Kacy
Allen, Ama Winland, and Emilie Lance lead defense. Lauren
Tolman played between the pipes.
The instructions for the match stressed taking away
space work hard to get a quality cross off, fill all
the dangerous spaces in front of the net and link the
marking backs with the offense.
Nine minutes in Whit McDonald and Heather Lind pushed
hard up the left side drawing defenders to the corner.
A nifty cut back freed Whit to rip the ball across the
top of the 18 to the feet of Mac Harper. Mac was cutting
across on a nice diagonal run, keeper her defender on
her hip. Mac’s one touch shot planted Daisy Vasilko
the Brave’s keeper giving Canal Winchester a 1
nil lead.
Only three minutes later, the left side pushed up and
again tested the Whetstone’s defense. Hard over
laps and delicate thru balls positioned Heater Lind
to push a ball through in front of Rachel Monsour. Rachel
allowed her feet to do their stuff and picked Daisy’s
net for the game winner.
The Braves’ Tepee was on fire and it was only
getting worse. Not to be out done the right side of
the Indians, offense decided to get into the act. Emilie
Lance nipped the sphere from Kasey Althouse freeing
Ashley Wolcott’s streaking run up the right touch
line. Ashley spotted Jessica Cabral at the top of the
box. Ashley’s pass sent Jessica in towards goal,
cutting left and right Jessica isolated herself with
Daisy, sending Daisy one way while the ball went the
other direction finding the net. All appeared well with
a nice 3-0 lead.
Kasey Althouse a determined Brave decided to bring some
reality to the match. Kasey muscled the ball away and
headed for the Indians goal and Lauren Tolman. Lauren
charged out but came up empty; Kasey calmly cut the
gap to 3-1.
Not all the bad news was this score, in the middle of
the first stanza Jordan Guiler scrapping for the ball
twisted her ankle and was done for the day.
The second period began with a determined Brave attack
trying to claw their way back into the match. The Braves
tested the back four but Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen,
Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Alex Cremeans refused
all advances. Stung by Kasey’s goal there would
be no more opportunities for the Braves to dance.
Early in the half Mac Harper was bopped in the head
and sat out the rest of the match.
The final tally came in the 26 minute of the period,
Catie Traylor operating as the central mid rushed in
and dispossessed Lee Rhein-Murry. Zipping to the out
side Catie threaded the needle with her pass to Taylor
Tackett. Taylor out paced the defense, cut around the
keeper and finished the scoring.
Keeper Lauren Tolman registered 5 saves. Canal Winchester’s
record stands 2-0-0.
August 24, 2009
Canal Winchester 4 Groveport 1
Opening night was as predictable as the swallows retuning
to San Juan Capistrano, the Humpback whales to the Alaska
waters and the buzzards to Hinckley Ohio. The varsity’s
warm up tape was rejected for less the stellar lyrics.
That would be about the
only low point of the 2009 season opening match. The
team worked from June 6 in preparation for tonight.
The work paid off with a solid match against the Groveport
Cruisers. The starters included many familiar faces
with a sprinkling of new. Whitney McDonald and Lauren
Tolman serve as captains, the remaining starters include
Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Taylor Tackett, Amber Walcott,
Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and two first
year players Jena Zuberi and Mackenzie Harper.
The action was not long
coming; early action was decidedly in favor of the tribe.
Several excellent attacks produced nothing more the
great deal of angst in the Cursers. In the eighth minute
a quick ball out from Taylor Tackett sent Katie Hahn
flying up the right side. Katie’s pace kicked
up some dust in the defense's face and her cross only
gave the Cruisers more trouble. Attempting to get the
ball out a Cruiser gave the Indians the first goal of
the young season.
The Indian bench looked
like a replacement depot; players rushed in and out
keeping heavy pressure on Groveport. Ten minutes after
Katie Hahn caused the first tally she nipped the onion
bag with her second. Canal Winchester‘s Brazilian
exchange student, Jessica Cabral popped the ball out
to the top of the penalty area for Katie. Katie’s
arching shot won the game. Not to be out done, Jessica
gathered in a nicely weighted cross from Heather Lind
and punished the keep with a laser to the back of the
net. The first period ended Canal Winchester 3 Groveport
nil.
The second stanza gave
the squad the opportunity to test themselves and work
out glitches. Whit McDonald running hard as a center
striker decided to get in on the action. Whit rumbled
right down the middle collecting a give and go from
Mac Harper cracking in the fourth goal of the match.
The Indian scoring was at an end, the rest of the match
was well played but with out denting the Cruiser net.
The Cruisers gapped the
brass ring once and erased Lauren Tolman’s shut
out. Turning back a determined Cruiser attacked resulted
in a handling the ball call. Amber Walcott challenging
the attack was judge by the official to have used her
arm. The resultant penalty shot was put away by Groveport’s
Coburn.
The Indians played with
a flat back four again this year. The 6 players who
rotated in and out worked well at turning back multiple
attacks while feeding the offense with well weighted
balls. Emilie Lance, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama
Winland, Andrea Ratliff and Alex Cremeans were rock
solid.
Keeper Lauren Tolman
registered 4 saves. Canal Winchester’s record
starts the way all the Indian faithful like, 1-0-0.
Next up is Whetstone, Saturday August 29. |
