October 20, 2009
Canal Winchester 1 Westerville South 5

The tournament was upon the Indians and they were ready to send the South squad packing with a one and done. A pleasant night was on tap weather wise, gone were the rain clouds all that was left was a pitch that looked like France in 1918. Large holes here and there with plenty of mud for all.

First things first, The Junior Varsity picked up an extra game against Bexley on Saturday night. The women teams from Canal have never had much luck playing over in Bexley, this was a different evening. The team that visited Bexley included keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Megan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart; midfielders Anne Hippler, Samantha Barwick, Jenna Zuberi, Kyrstin Warnimont, and strikers Abby Ternasky, Mac Harper and Brennen Hoptonstall. Abby Ternasky scored the match’s only tally giving the Indians a 1-0 advantage. Tough luck followed as Abby then went down with a turned ankle and was lost for the rest of the match. The Indians were down to only 10 players but were equal to the task. Savanna Daily made 11 saves to slam the door in Bexley’s face. The victory brought the JV record up to 13-1-3. Outstanding!

Three days after the JV’s great success the varsity headed north to South. Starting line up named Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Andrea Ratliff, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman. The remaining 21 who made the trip ready to go were Ashley Walcott, Jordan Guiler, Kaleigh Delong, Alex Cremeans, Jenna Zuberi, Caitie Traylor, Rachel Monsour, Kyrstin Warnimont, Megan Byrd and Anna Hippler.

The anticipation of a victory faded in the second stanza. The Indians were sitting all knotted up 1-1 after a beautiful goal from Katie Hahn’s corner kick. On the back post Jessica Gabral thundered in and nodded in the Indians last goal of the season. Number 52 was in the bag, unfortunately the Indians would need 5 more and those were not found. The bus bounced home as the team mulled over the season’s end. Final record was 9-6-2, good but not good enough.

All that is left is the team awards banquet tentatively set for November 2.

October 15, 2009
Canal Winchester 6 Logan Elm 0

Liquid sun shine again played into the Indians plans for the bodacious “Shoot for the Cure “matches. Resplendent in pink the Indians were set for a festive crowd, immaculate groomed pitch, senior night and a worthy opponent to focus on helping raise money for the cure. Rain threw a curve ball and forced the matches to be split between venues. The JV would contest on the old middle school field while the varsity would stay on the hastily repair pitch.

The Junior Varsity back at the old middle school found plenty of grass and little mud. The scene was set for a nice early evening of soccer. Starters were keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart; midfielders Anne Hippler, Samantha Barwick, Sarah Ramsey, Kyrstin Warnimont, and strikers Abby Ternasky and Brennen Hoptonstall. Listing the substitutes, none

Logan Elm was ready and looking for a good soccer brawl. Speed was their plan, play it long and let two fast strikers do the damage. Good plan but not good enough, possession was key and the Indians had the Braves locked up. Abby Ternasky scored the Indians first with a lightening run up the left side. Katelyn Issing nabbed the second Indian tally sending in a rebound. Sarah Ramsey working combinations inside to Taylor Thome got the ball just in time to fill the onion bag for an Indian lead, 3-1. In the second half Brennen Hoptonstall scored twice to cement the victory and bring the JV record up to 11-1-3.

While fans, trainer, officials made the trek to the football field the Indians focused on making the evening a pleasant senior night and “Shoot for the Cure”. The pitch was repaired but still retained great volumes of water. Footing would be an issue all night for both squads.

Seniors Heather Linn and Whit McDonald were introduced with their parents while exchange student Jessica Gabral was escorted by her sponsors. Their careers with Canal Winchester soccer were winding down; last regular season contest and tournament were all that is left.

Starting line up named Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

The first three minutes produced the game winner. Heather Linn tossed in a throw to Whit McDonald as she broke past the Brave defender. Whit cut in towards goal and launched a bending in swinger that nestled in the net for the game winner. Everyone could have gone home then and missed some fun for the Indian faith full.

Four minutes later a strong attack drove the ball into the box. Initially parried away the Braves did not grab possession; Mac Harper did and punished the flopping keeper with a dead on finish, 2-0 Indians.

The action was heavy in Logan Elm’s end. Time and time again the Indians would wrest away possession and attack. Emilie Lance, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott and Kacy Allen initiated counter attacks with well placed balls to the feet of advancing mids. In one action Taylor Tackett fought her way into the box to launch a shot, a desperate save sent the ball rebounding out to Katie Hahn. Kate’s touched knocked the sphere into the net for a 3-0 lead.

The duo reversed the action a few minutes later. In perhaps the best example of the effectiveness of a deep run, Taylor Tackett at full speed headed towards the line held by the Braves. Katie Hahn’s pass found Taylor at full stride in on the keeper. Taylor calmly chipped it over the charging keeper for a 4 -0 lead.

A frigid crew of Indians headed for the warmth of the locker room. Instructions were simple, keep on the pressure and preserve the shut out.

A constant stream of fresh Indians was more then the Braves could handle. While hard fought with both teams leaving no effort on the bench; the Braves only generated one shot on goal the entire evening.

Whit McDonald capped off the evening with the final two goals. The first was set up by Jordan Guiler’s tough work on the right flank. Jordan dispossessed a gaggle of Braves and found Whit lurking near the box. Jordan’s pass set up Whit’s finish, and a 5-0 lead. The last score of the evening was all Whitney McDonald. Whit stole the ball juking and jiving her way into the penalty area. Whit’s shot offered no chance to the Brave keeper and topped off the evening the final score 6-0 Indians.

Lauren Tolman ended the evening with a shut out and only one save.

Canal Winchester’s varsity record stands 9-5-2 with the JV carrying 11-1-3. The JV will play Bexley away on Saturday October 17, 5:30 PM.

October 10, 2009
Canal Winchester 1 Fisher Catholic 1

The sun was coming up shiny and the pitch although different was firm. The opponents assembled on the old middle school field to contest. Gators brought benches, trainers found the field, crowds assembled and for a change the varsity was given the opening match.

Saturday’s starters included Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

Fisher Catholic had a new look, new coach and was seeking some identity at the Indians expense. The first 40 minutes were give and take with the majority of the match contested in Fisher’s end. Shots were fired but none punished either keeper. That all changed in the 33 minute. An adjusted striker tandem was ensconced up front. Jessica Gabral and Taylor Tackett were plying their trade and looking dangerous. No sooner had these two worthies enter the match when Katie Hahn sent in a kick from the left side. Jessica gathered in the ball and shed her defender to create a seam to the back of the net. That was all Jessica needed scorching in a low burner that only stopped in the net; Canal Winchester 1 Fisher zip.

The Indians plan for the second 40 minutes was to continue tough defense, push up a central marking back to link with the offense and to get the very next goal. All seemed set when it was discovered that team captain and leading scorer Whit McDonald was carrying a leg strain. Her contributions would be missed in the second half.

After a quick adjustment the Indians went hard after Fisher, 8 shot were ripped on goal but all ended up in Michelle Wellstead’s hands. The game waned on with the Indians in control but not increasing their lead. In the final 2 minutes a cruel trick was played on the Indians. Fisher continued to play a ball after it had crossed the end line. Out of position the official never noticed how far out it was and let play continue, the resultant shot from Emily Shumaker nicked Amber Walcott’s leg and slipped in to tie the match. To say the least the Indians were hot but to no avail, a cruel trick had been played.

Lauren Tolman ended the afternoon with 3 saves.

The junior Varsity was left the task of removing a bad taste from all Indian faith full in a rematch with Amanda Clearcreek The starting line up was back to full strength with the exception of Anna Hippler who reported in sick from home. Starters were keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart; midfielders Caitie Traylor, Samantha Barwick, Sarah Ramsey, Kyrstin Warnimont, and strikers Abby Ternasky and Brennen Hoptonstall. Once again varsity players Caitie Traylor and Andrea Ratliff volunteered for double duty.

A spirited match insured with the Indians prevailing for their 10th victory. The game winner came as Abby Ternasky scored the first of her two tallies. She was followed by Brennen Hoptonstall and Catie Traylor who rounded out the 4-0 half time score.

Canal Winchester’s varsity record stands 8-5-2 with the JV carrying 10-1-2. A home match with Logan Elm and senior night is up next, Thursday 7:15 PM, October 15. The JV will play at Columbus Academy on Tuesday starting 5 PM and Logan Elm on Thursday at 5:30 PM.

The Indians will start the tournament away playing Westerville South, October 22 7 PM.

October 8, 2009
Canal Winchester 1 Teays Valley 4

A good solid match awaited both squads as they bounced over the highways of Ohio. A chance to grab the MSL title was in the offering; a worthy goal for all to aspire.

The JV mugs jumped right on the idea of a victory. The “bug” now had incapacitated two stalwarts, missing were Sarah Ramsey and Brennen Hoptonstall. Every one else took the field plus varsity players Caitie Traylor and Andrea Ratliff ; rounding it all out was keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart; midfielders Anna Hippler, Kyrstin Warnimont, and strikers Abby Ternasky and Samantha Barwick. Caitie Traylor punched in the 2 goals needed for a victory. The JV record stands at 9-1-2.

The varsity match began after senior night for 9 Teays seniors. To add a sparkle to the event lots of rain kept the field shimmering.

The regular starters were present for the match even with some gutting it out with the after effects of “bug’. Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

Practice was focused on several breakdowns troubling the Indians. When facing a fast quick opponent; mark even tighter contesting the first touch give no cushion, don’t let them turn, don’t dive in stay in front and contain. Remember goal side means you are in front not behind or next; this has cost us 6 goals in the last games and 2 more tonight. The Indians attack often ends up unbalanced in front of the goal, needed is width in front of goal. The team is missing many chances that hard work has created. Pass to beat head on pressure and angle play to side to move sweeper. Team was asked to accept only their best.

The first period was a tough match with each team getting some chances; it turned sour for the Indians in the 38 minute. A foul awarded to the Vikings’ resembled a corner kick. The Indians have proved good at clearing away corner kicks. The sloppy pitch added an element that did the Indians in, poor footing worked against the first clear. Viking Katie Saha knocked in a low squigglier that slipped through a load of legs and feet to slide under a diving Lauren Tolman. Now the Indians had to chase the match.

The first period had gone well except for one play. The Indians were confident they could over come this set back and earn a victory. Six minutes into the second half the same play that had trouble the Indians came back and bit them in the gluteus maximus. Tough play worked the ball deep against the Indians end line; the cross found “a look out she comes’ mark” on Megan Zealer. Megan wasted no time in putting in the game winner.

Now the Indians were chasing 2 goals. The chase was shortened when Canal’s Katie Hahn in a play that resembled the Vikings first goal punished Emily Kuehn to bring it back to 1-2. Hope was shot lived; one minute later the Vikings earned back a 2 goal lead. Laura Scott knocked in a tally. Miranda Wilkins closed out the affair with her score, 1-4 Vikings.

Lauren Tolman ended the evening with 7 saves and Alex Cremeans had 2. Canal Winchester’s record stands 8-5-1. A home match with Fisher Catholic is up next, Saturday 1 PM, October 10. The JV will play Amanda Clearcreek’s JV following the varsity at 3 PM. Due to the weather both matches will be played on the old middle school football field.

October 6, 2009
Canal Winchester 2 Wellington 5

The worthy Indians squad headed off to Upper Arlington and Wellington School. Awaiting them were a new infill artificial field and some covered benches, glad for the covers as the rain was present all night long.

The youngsters improved their record with a solid performance against Wellington’s JV. Some what depleted by the “bug” an adjusted line up took the field: keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart; four midfielders Sarah Ramsey, Andy Ratliff, Anna Hippler, Kyrstin Warnimont, with strikers Abby Ternasky and Samantha Barwick. To make sure enough players were available varsity players Caitie Traylor and Andrea Ratliff split the halves. The match was evenly contested except that the Indians scored 2 goals, compliments of Anna Hippler and Caitie Traylor. The JV record stands at 8-1-2.

The late addition began well but ended poorly. The Indians never mastered the speed of the field but poor play was the reason for a less then glorious result. The opening of the match found the usual cast of characters prowling the pith with the exception of Kacy Allen who was captured by the “bug’: Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Alex Cremeans, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

The first half ended in a draw and the Indians had every reason to believe that they could prevail. One of the best attacks of the season occurred early in the second period. The Indians absconded with the ball; Taylor Tackett zipped up the pitch, spotting Mac Harper on a run to the middle between the sweeper and a central defender. The ball was played to Mac who then hit Whit McDonald on a back post overlap. Whit punished the keeper with a tally; 1-0 Indians.

The Indians had hardly settled down when the first of 5 similar plays punished Canal. Each time a hard run down the flank put the ball against the end line. More times then it was enjoyable the cross was met by a Jaguar attacker who finished the play, 1-5 Wellington. Adjustments went for naught. The last bright spot was a late goal by Whit McDonald but the Indians were soundly thrashed 2-5.

Canal Winchester’s record stands 8-4-1. An away match against Teays Valley for the MSL championship is up next, Tuesday 7:15 PM, October 8. The JV will also be traveling to Teays Valley playing a 5:30 PM match.

October 1, 2009
Canal Winchester 3 Fairfield Union 0

Two bus loads of Indians ventured out in search of victory. One headed north to Worthington Christian School and the other east to Fairfield Union.

The youthful Indians scrambled off the bus rushing the pitch with keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart. Four midfielders Sarah Ramsey, Anna Hippler, Kyrstin Warnimont, Samantha Barwick with Abby Ternasky and Brennen Hoptonstall playing up front. One varsity player made the trip as well to shore up the juniors; Caitie Traylor was sent to make sure victory was secure. The Indian’s coterie wasted no time pulling the brass rings with a three nil victory. Anna Hippler had two tallies and Sarah Ramsey gathered the other. After suffering defeat in Grandville vanquishing Worthington Christian righted the canoe. The JV record stands at 7-1-2.

The Coonpath crew found the new Fairfield Union high School and the old field. Opening the event were Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

Shots were fired, crosses made, hard runs into the final third but again the hot shooting horde miss fired and let the Falcons off the perch. Soon the entire aviary was circling in the penalty box daring the Indians to score. The Indians were happy to oblige but it took 27 minutes to realize a result. Pushing hard Whit McDonald snaked the sphere from a Falcon (unsafe at any speed) and ripped it to the space just in front of a rumbling Taylor Tackett. Taylor kicked in her over drive and raced into the box, bang the game was over. Taylor’s tally was the game winner, Indians 1 – Falcons zip.

The first stanza was spoken with out benefit of further scores. The Indians allowed that touch passing would be the key to unravel the knot of Falcons camping in front of the box.

The storm clouds were gathering as the half kicked off. An ill wind was blowing towards the Falcon goal. Fifteen minutes in Katie Hahn decided if you can’t shoot through the crowd shoot over. After ripping the ball away Katie cut in clearing the crowd in hot pursuit. She launched a long bending ball that settled in the net to crush the Falcon sprit; Indians 2 Fairfield Union a big zero.

The Indians planned on playing every one fit each half getting ready for the play offs. The bench resembled a revolving door with fresh folks running in and out. Immediately after one switch, Jordan Guiler isolated herself on the left side. Gaining separation from her defender Jordan whipped a ball across the box; Jessica Cabral pounced and rocketed a shot to the net, 3-0.

The match ended with Indian keeper Lauren Tolman making 5 saves and earning a shout out. Jessica Gabral stands as the leading point getter, with 8 goals and 4 assists; Mackenzie Harper is right behind with 8 goals and 3 assists and so is Whit McDonald who has 7 goals and 5 assists.

Canal Winchester’s record stands 8-3-1. An away match against Wellington is up next, Tuesday 7:15 PM, October 6. The JV will also be traveling to Wellington playing a 5:30 PM match.

September 24, 2009
Canal Winchester 2 Circleville 2
A soft Irish day greeted the Indian faithful, and then it turned to just plan old rain. The Tigers of Circleville were coming to town for a good old fashion soccer match. In the golden age of radio the Tigers won all the matches but since the dawn of rap (not sure it's spelled correctly) it’s been tightly played draw matches.

The Junior Varsity assigned the opening act thumped Columbus Academy. The squad taking the pitch was keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart. Four midfielders Sarah Ramsey, Anna Hippler, Kyrstin Warnimont, Samantha Barwick with Abby Ternasky and Brennen Hoptonstall playing up front. Early on it was obvious that the Vikings were out match. The Indians scored 9 goals: Abby Ternasky 3, Anna Hippler, Brennen Hoptonstall 2, Sarah Ramsey, Samantha Barwick and Katelyn Issing. The last 10 minutes the Indians played with 8 field players. On Tuesday September 22, the Junior Varsity tied a match with Pickerington Central, 2-2. The JV record stands at 6-0-2.

The main event was on and starting tonight were Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Amber Walcott, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

The match started strong for the Indians. Early attacks were filled with quick aggressive passes, hard runs and strong challenges that demanded a goal but not were offered. Possession was all Indians as the Tigers were having trouble penetrating the Indian final third. An opportunity to bury the Tigers was at hand but not realized.

Eighteen minutes in Ashley Walcott in combination with Jenna Zuberi and Whit McDonald sent Rachel Monsour into space on the left flank. Rachel worked her way to the end line, blocked by a Tiger defender Rachel cut back and ripped a cross in to Whit McDonald. Whit drilled the ball to the back of the net, 1-0 Indians.

The Indian attack was relentless but unfruitful; the cruelty of soccer was demonstrated in the 32nd minute. The Tigers had the ball deep on the right side and under pressure. The resultant cross found the Indian defense over shifted with out midfield support; Jenna Grunden received the cross for a one touch finish, 1-1.

The half ended with the Indians retreating to the small comfort of the locker room. The plan was simple keep up the pressure and finish the chances, the Indians were out shooting the Tigers 7 to 4 at this point.

The second period was as hard as the rain; both teams were playing with reckless abandon. The momentum shifted dramatically to the Tigers when they repeated the play that lead to their first goal. The Tigers were back working the right side and managed to send in a cross to the top of the 6, again Jenna Grunden was present to beat the defenders for a 1-2 lead with only 9 minutes to play. All the outstanding work by the Indians seemed for naught.

The Indians quickly shifted to three strikers pulling up Kacy Allen form the back. Additionally Mackenzie Harper and Jessica Gabral went into the game. Four minutes later the additional attackers paid off. After several brilliant runs by Taylor Tackett to keep the Indians in the Tiger final third, Canal's chance came again. Playing off a corner kick the Indians swarmed the goal; as the ball skidded to the back side Mac Harper knocked it in to even the match. Both squads had one more good chance to grab a victory but alas none was in the offering, the victory bell remained silent.

The match ended with Indian keeper Lauren Tolman making 7 saves. Mackenzie Harper stands as the leading point getter, with 8 goals and 3 assists; Whit McDonald is right behind with 7 goals and 4 assists.

Canal Winchester’s record stands 7-3-1. An away match against Fairfield Union is up next, Thursday 6 PM, October 1.

The JV added a mid week game and will travel to Grandville for a 5:30 PM match on Tuesday, September 29. The JV will also be traveling October 1 to Worthington Christian School playing a 5 PM match.

September 17, 2009
Canal Winchester 3 Bloom Carroll 1

Excitement was in the air the Bloom Carroll Bulldogs were coming to town. Nothing better then a crystal clear night, a good pitch and a worthy opponent to get the blood flowing.

The Junior Varsity opened the evening with a resounding victory. The squad taking the pitch was keeper Savanna Daily, defenders Taylor Thome, Katelyn Issing, Meagan Byrd and Brianna Meinhart. Four midfielders Sarah Ramsey, Jenna Zuberi, Kyrstin Warnimont, Samantha Barwick with Abby Ternasky and Brennen Hoptonstall playing up front. Three goals were registered this night, two from Brennen Hoptonstall and Abby Ternasky’s one. The JV record stands at 5-0-1. The JV has not conceded a single goal this season.

Now for the main event, additional line up fine tuning was accomplished after the Indians’ victory over Liberty Union. Starting tonight were Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Jessica Gabral, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Alexandria Cremeans, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

Participating in a soccer community food drive night the Indian faithful were hungry for some action. The Indians used a high dittle dittle down the middle attach to punish the Bulldogs. Two minutes in Jessica Gabral smoked her defender and sent the sphere Mackenzie Harper’s way, Mac loped in cut back and sent her cross to the front of the net. Jessica Gabral improving her position was running hard to the back post, one touch later Jessica headed the Indians into the lead.

The rest of the first period was missed opportunity for the Indians. The attack was strong but results were not. Bloom’s keeper Monica Cruz made several excellent saves keeping her pack in the game. Kristen Smith jumped in and drew the Bulldogs even with a strong finish to a mediocre clearance attempt by the Indians back four. Normally emphatic with their touches, on this occasion the Indians were playing pin ball with Kristen getting the last touch. The first period ended 1 – 1; another tough scrappy match with Bloom what did you expect?

The talk focused on a few facts, continue the strong play, look for rebounds from the Bulldog keeper Monica Cruz, move the ball to feet and enjoy the rest of the night.

The game winner came 12 minutes into the second half. Strong pressure had again earned the Indians a corner kick. A looping ball was sent across by Katie Hahn, the scrum in front of the goal knocked it out to the back post and Whitney McDonald. Whit advanced to the near post and rifled the ball to the net, Indians 2 and Bloom uno.

The Bulldogs were yapping and fired up. It was now or never for their dreams and they threw 3 strikers into the fray. So sad for the Bulldogs, Andrea Ratliff (the birthday girl) calmed them down as did Kacy Allen, Amber Walcott and Emilie Lance. Acting as the Dog Whisperers, the Indians took away all Bulldog treats.

The Indians closed the door on the proceedings in the final 8 minutes. Gathering up a throw in center midfield Jenna Zuberi cut around the defensive pressure worked her way into the penalty box where she punished Monica, 3-1 Indians. Hasta la vista Bulldogs.

The match ended with Indian keeper Lauren Tolman making four saves. Jessica Gabral stands as the leading point getter, with 7 goals and 4 assists; Mackenzie Harper is right behind with 7 goals and 3 assists.

Canal Winchester’s record stands 7-3-0. A home match against Circleville is up next, Thursday 5:30 PM, September 24 for JV and 7:15 PM for varsity.

The JV added a mid week game and will travel to Pickerington Central for a 5:30 PM match on Tuesday, September 22.

September 15, 2009
Canal Winchester 10 Liberty Union 2
A full bus headed off to Baltimore. All were excited anticipating some good Maryland crab cakes alas the trip was shorter then expected and all the Indians found were soy beans.

Adjustments were made to the Indian attack. Eleven took the pitch but no longer in a 4-3-3. A switch was made to a 4-4-2, responding to a 1-3 record in the last 4 games. The revamped starting line up had Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Mackenzie Harper, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Andrea Ratliff, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

The Indians were happy to participate in the inaugural girl’s soccer season for the Liberty Union Lions. As it turned out the Lions played hard but were bagged by the Indians. In the first 10 minutes the Indians looked like the tribe that could not shoot straight. Plenty of chances were earned but none punished the Lions. That all changed in the 11th minute. Whitney McDonald sent in a corner kick, Mackenzie Harper grabbed the ball and attacked. Mac whipped in a shot and the scoreless game was broken open.

Eight minutes later Jenna Zuberi working the middle spotted Jessica Cabral in a hole in the Lion defense, pushing the ball in set up Jessica’s shot, as quick as that the score was 2-0. The Lions responded a few minutes later. Working the ball up the left side, the Lions fired in a cross. A few Indians tried to knock the ball away but Tori Holstein got there first and poked it across; 2-1 Canal Winchester.

The Lion tally fired up the Indian attack. Thirty four minutes in Whitney McDonald slalomed her way through the Lion defense and ripped the net with a blast, 3-1 Indians. The net had hardly stopped ruffling when Whit spotted Taylor Tackett busting up the right side. Whit put the ball to Taylor’s foot, who wacked it past a lunging keeper, 4-1 Indians. Three minutes later Taylor assisted in the final tally of the half. Working out to the flank, Taylor set a cross into Mackenzie Harper who one touch the ball into the back of the net. The first half ended with the Indians up 5-1.

The second period was a copy of the first. The dust was hardly stirring when Mackenzie Harper spied Whit McDonald breaking to goal in the middle. Mac laid it in and Whit punished the Lions, 6-1. The fans had hardly settled back in their seats when Mackenzie Harper was set up by Heather Lind. Heather fired in a cross for Mac’s two touch into the goal.

The next two scores were generated by Ashley Walcott feeding Rachel Monsour who did what she likes to do best, beat the keeper. The duo only needed two minutes to run the score board up to 9-1.

The Lions responded after a foul was whistled against Caitie Traylor in the box. Caitie was playing tough and harshly treated by the official. A yellow card was given to the entire Indian team for verbally pointing out to the official that his view was not shared by all. A penalty kick was given and Lauren Benson was able to catch Alex Cremeans diving right sending her shot left, cutting the margin 9-2.

Heather Lind set up the final tally, finding Jessica Cabral working the middle. Heather’s cross was tapped in by Jessica for the final goal. The match ended with an Indian 10-2 victory. The Lions were game but out matched. Keepers Lauren Tolman and Alex Cremeans each recorded a save.

Canal Winchester’s record stands 6-3-0. A home match against Bloom Carroll is up next, Thursday 5:30 PM, September 15 for JV and 7:15 PM for varsity.

Canal Winchester 0 Lancaster 1
A beautiful Saturday afternoon greeted the Indian faithful for a spirited match with the Gales of Lancaster.

The Junior Varsity continued their mastery of opponents, whipping the junior Gales 5-0. Brennen Hoptonstall, Sarah Ramsey twice, Sami Barwick, Katelyn Issing all ripped the Gales net. The down side was an injury to Anna Hippler who popped her knee and ended up on crutches.

The varsity came on with Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour, Taylor Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

Two loses out of last three matches had the Indians smarting. Grimly determined to right the ship the Indians came out battling. The first period began to have a familiar look. The attach was putting players in on goal with wonderful chances to score but again ground snakes, wood work and soaring balls kept the Gales net immaculate. The Gales answered with booming shots that did not trouble Indian keeper Loran Tolman.

In the second period was “same oh same oh”. Indians attacks were like ripe plumbs on a branch with no one around to pluck them. Disaster struck in the 70th minute; the yellow shirts spotted something and awarded the Gales free kick out side the 18. Raven Frances lined up and sent a loping ball to towards goal, a quick shove later Zaneta Block sent the ball and Lauren Tolman into the net. The Indians fought back but to no avail. The loss was a bitter pill to swallow.

Canal Winchester’s record stands 5-3-0. Liberty Union is up next, Tuesday 5:30 PM, September 15. Match location is Liberty Union Elementary, 1000 S. Main St., Baltimore.

< JV after beating Amanda

The Indians headed south for a match with the Aces.

The Junior Varsity took the field and promptly ran up a big victory, 9 -0 over the junior Aces. Tallies were accounted for by Sami Barwick, Abby Ternasky, Brennan Hoptonstall, Anna Hippler, Catie Traylor, Brianna Meinhart and the Aces helped by scoring 3 for the Indians.

The varsity started the evening with Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour, Taylor Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman on the pitch.

The Indian scheme was apply high pressure and make sure we watched the Smith girls. Offensively the plan was to eliminate wasted chances, cashing in instead. The Indians knew they could play the Aces step for step but it would be a close match and goals precious.

The first period lived up to its billing. A tough physical game was under way. The Aces enjoyed pushing forward with the Indians responding. Several chances went by the board; the Aces’ wood work did yeoman’s work in defending the goal. Shots bounced off the post or were sent high. Close but no cigar and the missed chances would haunt the Indians. The half ended the way it started, nil-nil.

In the second period the game winner came off of a hard run into the left corner by Smith. Battling every step was Emilie Lance. Scrapping for the ball Emilie was shoved to the ground; Smithy took a few steps and worked a shot in from the end line.

Getting the important 1-0 lead; the Aces iced the match with a quick counter attack off of an Indian corner kick, once again Smithy did the damage sending in the second tally to close out the scoring. The anticipation of a score sent all but 2 Indian defenders up looking for a chance. Even Steven at the midfield line proved to be costly; there was only 15 minutes to make up two goals. The score board read 0-2 and constant heavy Indian attaches could not change the out come. A grumpy bunch of Indians headed north.

Canal Winchester’s record stands 5-2-0. A Saturday match versus Lancaster is up next, September 12.

Canal Winchester 4 Zane Trace 1
The final bell had barely rung when the Indians loaded the bus for a trip south, destination Zane Trace. The Indians were prepared to treat the Zane Trace Pioneers rough.

The Junior Varsity wasted no time in the preliminary match; Samantha Barwick scored the matches only tally in the first few minutes just ahead of the thunder. After several restarts of the 30 minute delay clock the match was ended with an Indian victory.

The weather cleared sufficiently to start the varsity match only 5 minutes late. Starters this night included Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour, Taylor Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

The Indian scheme was to take away space and to not miss any opportunities in front of goal. The plan worked after the first 4 minutes. A few great opportunities went by the board before a free kick was given to the Pioneers. Holding a high line the Indians saw Megan Jaruwannakorn break on the kick and race towards goal. She took a touch and zipped the sphere in passed a diving Lauren Tolman; Zane Trace 1 the Indians de nada.

The next 30 minutes demonstrated that the Indians could earn great opportunities with little result. That all changed in the 35 minute, an Indian corner kick sent the ball to the box, Zane Trace half heartily cleared it but only as far as Rachel Monsour’s feet. Rachel blasted in three shots; two were sent straight back to her but not the final shot. The match stood even.

The last 2 minutes of the half provided the game winner. Taylor Tackett working the right side fought her way into the top of the 18. Taylor sent in a big bending ball that eluded the Pioneers best efforts for a score. The half ended with a 2-1 Indian lead.

Icing on the cake arrived only 7 minutes into the second period. Whitney McDonald rumbled up the middle slipping past defenders like a banana peal. Whit did not waste her shot and finished off the Pioneers with an unassisted tally for a 3-1 lead. Ten minutes latter the attacking combination of McKenzie Harper and Jessica Cabral pushed into the final 1/3 pulling apart the Zane Trace defenders. Jessica’s touch to McKenzie for a shot ended the scoring.

The score board read 4-1 and a stout Indian defense would insure it stayed that way. Serious tough play kept the Zane Trace faithful unhappy with the result. Time and time again Indians raced in to disrupt any chance the pioneers could muster. Anticipating play the Indians arrived to nick the ball away and start a counter attack. Six rotating mids out worked the center of the Pioneer attack: Katie Hahn, Heather Lind, Ashley Walcott, Jenna Zuberi, Caitie Traylor, Kaleigh Delong, Jordan Guiler and Kyrstin Warnimont did the heavy work. The back four allowed very limited opportunities reflected in keeper Lauren Tolman’s 2 saves. Amber Walcott, Emilie lance, Ama Winland, Kacy Allen, Alex Cremeans and Andrea Ratliff matched the Zane Trace strikers stride for stride stifling all opportunities.

Canal Winchester’s record stands 5-1-0. Next up is undefeated Amanda Clearcreek, Thursday September 10. A 4:15 PM bus departure is scheduled from CWHS with both the varsity and JV.

September 5, 2009
Canal Winchester 2 Jonathan Alter 4
The Indians traveled out over hill and dale to play matches with the Pioneers of Jonathan Alter. The JV match went peachy a nice 6-0 win for the Indians. Alas the second match with a very promising start ended up in ignominious defeat. A bitter taste not experienced this season until today.

The team taking the pitch was familiar to all the Indian faithful; Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour, Taylor Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

The Indians knew the Pioneer attackers were formidable and bore extra watching, especially Chaska Yoder. Chaska is a very active and hard working striker with excellent ball skills. The plan was to make our chances pay while challenging every ball played in towards the Indian goal.

The Indians struck first Jessica Gabral with combination play set up by good midfield defense worked her way to the left. A strong cross set up McKenzie Harper for the first tally of the match.

The next nine minutes presented opportunities for both sides to push in a goal but all chances went wasted. Jessica again worked some magic and touched Whitney McDonald through with good angle to goal. Whit wasted no time thundering in cutting around the keeper tapping in the score for an Indian 2-0 lead.

Possession was in favor the final minutes of the first stanza but Indian attacks came up empty.

Expecting a strong push by the pioneers a quick Indian team was sent out to start the second period. A simple task was given, get goal number three and finish the Pioneers. Fate was not kind; Chaska Yoder again proved why it’s reasonable to respect her skills. She orchestrated 4 unanswered goals; scoring 2 while getting help from Alexis Milesky and Nikki McGrew.

Analysis of the match points to several areas the Indians will need to improve. Recognition of an unbalanced defense and where to apply help. Often a single marking back attempted to slow an attack with no cover offered or coming from others. Two, playing possession when the heat is turned up, is a better answer then long balls or sprints to goal with out support. Lastly, emulating Chaska’s striker play; she anticipated, sprinted and fought for every ball cleared by the Pioneer defense.

Keeper Lauren Tolman made 9 saves. Canal Winchester’s record stands 4-1-0. Next up is Zane Trace, Tuesday September 8. A 3:45 PM bus departure is scheduled from CWHS with both the varsity and JV.

Canal Winchester 7 Hamilton Township 0
A big bright moon shined on the Indians this night. Out of Sync tones rolled through the stadium as the Indian squad prepared for a match with Hamilton Township Rangers. The Indians were prepared for a brawl.

A worthy first team took the pitch comprising Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour, Taylor Tackett, Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jena Zuberi, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Lauren Tolman.

The plan was simple eliminate mistakes and make crosses count, striving for a higher level of performance.

Not all the over flow crowd had taken their seat when the Indians struck. The Ranger kick off was stolen and a couple of touches later found Heather Lind on the door step , the Ranges were kind enough to leave it open and Heather obliged, game winner was in under thirty seconds.

Taking it hard the Rangers scrapped to keep the roof from falling in. Jackie Moore Hamilton’s keeper pulled the bacon from the fire for the next 30 minutes. All play was in the Indians’ final third but shot after shot was sent away. The entire team had entered the match but to no avail. The score would have been high were the Indians in a horse shoe match were close counts.

Time proved that not all good things last, with eight minutes to go Heather Lind played combination ball and worked her way to the end line. Heather spied Rachel Monsour lurking between the 18 and 6 yard box. Heather’s delivery was on the money and so was Rachel’s shot, 2-0 Indians. Two minutes later Heather repeated her passing prowess with Katie Hahn the beneficiary. Katie collected her pass and one touched the sphere into the back of the net. The net had not cooled down when Rachel Monsour dispossessed a Ranger defender, the race was on. Rachel zipped in on goal sending the keeper one way while the ball went the other, 3-0. Rachel was now trying on hats for size to see if maybe one would fit.

The game clocked showed less then 2 minutes left in the first half. Anna Hippler playing as the left midfield worker her way up to the top of the 18; cutting back Anna left her defender on her hip clearing a nice lane into Rachel Monsour. Once again the Rangers were punished with Rachel bagging her third goal for the evening, Indians 5 - Hamilton 0.

A keeper change was made to start the second period. Alex Cremeans went in for Lauren Tolman. The remaining starters re-entered the game. The plan was to push hard at keeping played balls on the ground. Its to easy to blast it forward when a team believes the going will be easy, the goal was to create deliberate dangerous plays with the Ranger goal surrounded.

The Indians played like their hair was on fire. There was no respite given to a tired Ranger crew. Great chances came and went; the big constant for the Ranges was keeper Jackie Moore. She recorded 18 saves for the evening. Alas for Jackie all her good work would not keep Jessica Cabral at bay. Only 15 minutes remain when Jessica struck. Jenna Zuberi operating as center striker sucked the defense in and laid the ball off to Jessica for an easy tally. That was number 6 for an Indian celebration. The last score of the night was fun to watch. Jessica playing with her back to the goal popped the ball over head, spun and tapped in goal number 7 for the evening.

During the run of play the Rangers were unable to generate a single shot on goal. They certainly tried but the Indian defense smothered all opportunities. Mention must go to Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Jenna Zuberi, Catie Traylor, Ashley Wolcott, Kaleigh Delong, Kyrstin Warnimont, Anna Hippler, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance, Alex Cremeans, Andrea Ratliff and Megan Byrd. The midfield and backs were unrelenting in applying pressure.

Keepers Lauren Tolman and Alex Cremeans never got a chance to make a save. Canal Winchester’s record stands 4-0-0. Next up is Jonathan Alter pioneers, Saturday September 5.

Canal Winchester 3 Lakewood 0
The shifting sands of time threw the worthy Indians off kilter and this reporter, Harry Head as well. Anticipating a leisurely drive to Hebron and a 7:15 pm game start I had to scramble and rely on my trusty red power Para-glider to reach the match in time.

The starters included a trio of strikers Whitney McDonald, Rachel Monsour and Taylor Tackett midfielders Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, and Jena Zuberi. Seeking a shut out were Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, and Emilie Lance. Lauren Tolman stared into the sun guarding the 24 foot cavern.

The instructions for the match stressed improved crosses, filling the dangerous areas and touch. The field has a bit of a crown, a little narrow with a few bumps. The pitch will temp you to blast long balls but balls played to feet work best. Lastly as always take away the attackers space.

Seven minutes had elapsed when heavy pressure on the Lancer’s goal paid off. Taylor Tackett pounced on an errant pass and ripped in towards net. She froze the keeper then heated her up again with a torch for the tally. The game winner was up on the board.

Four minutes later. Taylor Tackett made another strong diagonal run into the left corner with Lancers in hot pursuit. A quick cut back allowed Taylor to work her way towards the middle. Spotting Katie Hahn angling hard to the goal Taylor sent the ball to Katie’s feet. Katie sent it into the net, 2 nil Indians.

A second wave of Indians entered the fray and proved to be just as lethal as the earlier crew. The change of pace added by Jessica Cabral, Mackenzie Harper, Catie Traylor, Ashley Wolcott and Kaleigh Delong kept the action in the final third. Time and time again well placed shots manage to just drift by a post or top of the net. One shot parried out by the Lancer keeper Jessie Lewis earned an Indian’s corner kick. Whit McDonald ripped in a bending ball just over Lewis reach. A swarm of Indians crashed the goal box. Taylor Tackett’s first shot hit the under side of the top bar, Mackenzie Harper’s touch sent it a smidgen farther and the goal was tallied. The half ended with the Indians ahead 3-0.

The Lancer’s came out poking pushing the attack out of their final third to the middle of the field. Every back that made the trip earned top honors for stomping out each foray with flair. The defense of Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance, Alex Cremeans, Andrea Ratliff and Megan Byrd never bent or wavered. The defense was so thorough that keeper Lauren Tolman was begging to get a save or two. In fact that was all she got, two. One was a beauty, the only time the Lancers really threatened 2 minutes were left in the contest. A Lancer shot on goal was swept off the line by Lauren's diving stretching reach, the ball was then cleared by Alex Cremeans.

Keeper Lauren Tolman registered 2 saves in the teams first shut out of the season. Canal Winchester’s record stands 3-0-0. Next up is Hamilton Township, Thursday September 3.

August 29, 2009
Canal Winchester 4 Whetstone 1
Saturday brought a bright sunny afternoon, clearing away the lightening that ended Friday night’s the 100 year celebration. The Bexley’s football squad was replaced by the Whetstone Braves girls soccer team, the result would be the same; the pealing of the victory bell.

The starters for the match included front runners Whitney McDonald, Mackenzie Harper and Taylor Tackett. An active and solid midfield of Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, and Jena Zuberi backed up by a stingy Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, and Emilie Lance lead defense. Lauren Tolman played between the pipes.

The instructions for the match stressed taking away space work hard to get a quality cross off, fill all the dangerous spaces in front of the net and link the marking backs with the offense.

Nine minutes in Whit McDonald and Heather Lind pushed hard up the left side drawing defenders to the corner. A nifty cut back freed Whit to rip the ball across the top of the 18 to the feet of Mac Harper. Mac was cutting across on a nice diagonal run, keeper her defender on her hip. Mac’s one touch shot planted Daisy Vasilko the Brave’s keeper giving Canal Winchester a 1 nil lead.

Only three minutes later, the left side pushed up and again tested the Whetstone’s defense. Hard over laps and delicate thru balls positioned Heater Lind to push a ball through in front of Rachel Monsour. Rachel allowed her feet to do their stuff and picked Daisy’s net for the game winner.

The Braves’ Tepee was on fire and it was only getting worse. Not to be out done the right side of the Indians, offense decided to get into the act. Emilie Lance nipped the sphere from Kasey Althouse freeing Ashley Wolcott’s streaking run up the right touch line. Ashley spotted Jessica Cabral at the top of the box. Ashley’s pass sent Jessica in towards goal, cutting left and right Jessica isolated herself with Daisy, sending Daisy one way while the ball went the other direction finding the net. All appeared well with a nice 3-0 lead.

Kasey Althouse a determined Brave decided to bring some reality to the match. Kasey muscled the ball away and headed for the Indians goal and Lauren Tolman. Lauren charged out but came up empty; Kasey calmly cut the gap to 3-1.

Not all the bad news was this score, in the middle of the first stanza Jordan Guiler scrapping for the ball twisted her ankle and was done for the day.

The second period began with a determined Brave attack trying to claw their way back into the match. The Braves tested the back four but Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Alex Cremeans refused all advances. Stung by Kasey’s goal there would be no more opportunities for the Braves to dance.

Early in the half Mac Harper was bopped in the head and sat out the rest of the match.

The final tally came in the 26 minute of the period, Catie Traylor operating as the central mid rushed in and dispossessed Lee Rhein-Murry. Zipping to the out side Catie threaded the needle with her pass to Taylor Tackett. Taylor out paced the defense, cut around the keeper and finished the scoring.

Keeper Lauren Tolman registered 5 saves. Canal Winchester’s record stands 2-0-0.

August 24, 2009
Canal Winchester 4 Groveport 1

Opening night was as predictable as the swallows retuning to San Juan Capistrano, the Humpback whales to the Alaska waters and the buzzards to Hinckley Ohio. The varsity’s warm up tape was rejected for less the stellar lyrics.

That would be about the only low point of the 2009 season opening match. The team worked from June 6 in preparation for tonight. The work paid off with a solid match against the Groveport Cruisers. The starters included many familiar faces with a sprinkling of new. Whitney McDonald and Lauren Tolman serve as captains, the remaining starters include Heather Lind, Katie Hahn, Taylor Tackett, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and two first year players Jena Zuberi and Mackenzie Harper.

The action was not long coming; early action was decidedly in favor of the tribe. Several excellent attacks produced nothing more the great deal of angst in the Cursers. In the eighth minute a quick ball out from Taylor Tackett sent Katie Hahn flying up the right side. Katie’s pace kicked up some dust in the defense's face and her cross only gave the Cruisers more trouble. Attempting to get the ball out a Cruiser gave the Indians the first goal of the young season.

The Indian bench looked like a replacement depot; players rushed in and out keeping heavy pressure on Groveport. Ten minutes after Katie Hahn caused the first tally she nipped the onion bag with her second. Canal Winchester‘s Brazilian exchange student, Jessica Cabral popped the ball out to the top of the penalty area for Katie. Katie’s arching shot won the game. Not to be out done, Jessica gathered in a nicely weighted cross from Heather Lind and punished the keep with a laser to the back of the net. The first period ended Canal Winchester 3 Groveport nil.

The second stanza gave the squad the opportunity to test themselves and work out glitches. Whit McDonald running hard as a center striker decided to get in on the action. Whit rumbled right down the middle collecting a give and go from Mac Harper cracking in the fourth goal of the match. The Indian scoring was at an end, the rest of the match was well played but with out denting the Cruiser net.

The Cruisers gapped the brass ring once and erased Lauren Tolman’s shut out. Turning back a determined Cruiser attacked resulted in a handling the ball call. Amber Walcott challenging the attack was judge by the official to have used her arm. The resultant penalty shot was put away by Groveport’s Coburn.

The Indians played with a flat back four again this year. The 6 players who rotated in and out worked well at turning back multiple attacks while feeding the offense with well weighted balls. Emilie Lance, Amber Walcott, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland, Andrea Ratliff and Alex Cremeans were rock solid.

Keeper Lauren Tolman registered 4 saves. Canal Winchester’s record starts the way all the Indian faithful like, 1-0-0. Next up is Whetstone, Saturday August 29.

October 16, 2008 - SECTIONAL FINAL
Canal Winchester 0 Upper Arlington 10
“Second tournament game for us last game for them” was the Indians chant as they hit the road to battle the bear skin rugs. The effort was given but the results were in UA’s favor.

A season of accomplishment ended with a young Indian team winning seven games and tying four. Nine new starters took the field in August. The 2008 squad played with heart and tenacity; a season well done. Four new backs took some lumps but improved with every match. Katie Hahn the sweeper added maturity beyond her 9th grade status, a converted striker Kacy Allen provided leadership from her central back position. Both Emilie Lance and Ama Winland developed into solid man markers who did not yield goals. Ama added two scores with ferocious headers.

The mid field was collection of 8 players, rotating in and out with excellent result. Fore most was 3rd Team D1 All District Whitney McDonald, scoring 14 goals with 5 assists. Whit ran our offence and some time filled in as a back. Following in her footsteps was “Easy” Ashley Wolcott. Ashley was often assigned to mark a player out of the game; her energy level was second to none. The out sides rotated effectively with Taylor Tackett, Brittney Carroll, Heather Linn, Kaleigh Delong, Jordan Guiler, Amber Wolcott and Kyrstin Warnimont. Injuries took its toll on the outside mids but as a group the remaining available adjusted and worked well together. The strikers were led by senior and captain Nikki Ternasky. Nikki gave the team a spark with her drive to goal, scoring 8 goals and two assists, earning 2nd team all league. Rachel Monsour and Taylor Tackett provided balance combining for seven goals and six assists.

Keeper Lauren Tolman had 101 saves. A first time started Lauren filled Jordan Osborn’s big shoes with out missing a beat. She became a leader on the field during practices and matches, earning 2nd team all league.

Rounding out the team was a senior Shukri Farah and first year Alex Cremeans. Shukri demonstrated the how too for the squad. She showed all that work is what brings improvement. Alex is an excellent goal keeper and worked to keep her self sharp for any eventuality. She also filled in on the field as a striker and mid.

Canal Winchester’s season record is 7-6-4.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Kacy Allen, Emilie Lance, Whitney McDonald, Katie Hahn, Rachel Monsour, Ashley Wolcott, Brittney Carroll, Taylor Tackett, Nikki Ternasky and Ama Winland

October 14, 2008 - SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT
Canal Winchester 2 Groveport 1
The tournament had arrived and the Indians were ready for the Cruisers. Enjoying the home atmosphere the Indians were anxious to earn a chance to play Upper Arlington and the only way there was to cruise Groveport around and out of town.

The start was not in the script. On the first couple of touches a long ball was played in to Katie Hahn sweeping in front of the Indian keeper Lauren Tolman. As Katie looked for the dust pan another Hahn, Kourtney snatched up the lose ball and punished the Indians, 1-0 Groveport.

The next 15 minutes went decidedly to the Indians; multiple attackers were launched again and again. The attacks were brilliant the finishing was not. Unlike horse shoes close gets you no points.

Slight adjustments in practice moved Ama Winland on frees and corners to the back post. The practice paid better dividends then Wall Street. No bail out for the Cruisers today. Earning a corner kick, Whit McDonald sent a ball to the far post. Ama thundered in and headed the ball to the back of the net. The score was emphatic, 1-1.

The half time speech focused on taking away space, putting balls thru on the ground and taking shots. One field adjustment was made; Katie Hahn was mover up to center mid to spice up the Indian attack.

Two key events occurred in the second stanza. First gave the Indians enough points to advance and the second saved those points. 14 minutes in to the period, Katie Hahn spotted Nikki Ternasky on the flank with space in front. A well weighted ball put Nikki in at full speed. Nikki drew out the keeper, cut her out of the play and calmly nipped the ball into the net: Indians 2 Groveport 1. The second crucial play occurred with 8 minutes to go, Groveport’s Kourtney Hahn gather a rebound and ran past the Indian defense. One v one with the keeper, a classic confrontation won by Lauren Tolman. Lauren controlled her run until Kourtney played the ball just a bit too far in front, out zipped Lauren gobbling up the ball and the Cruiser’s dreams. Good night ladies its time to see you go!

Keeper Lauren Tolman had 4 saves. The entire Indian squad contributed to the win. Amber Wolcott out since the match against Bishop Ready was cleared to play.

Canal Winchester’s record is 7-5-4. Next up is an away tournament match with Upper Arlington, Thursday October 16 at 7 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Kacy Allen, Emilie Lance, Whitney McDonald, Katie Hahn, Rachel Monsour, Ashley Wolcott, Brittney Carroll, Taylor Tackett, Nikki Ternasky and Ama Winland

Canal Winchester 0 Amanda Clearcreek 1
The final match of the regular season was upon the soccer tribe. Hard to believe the work that started in June was coming to a close. The Indians knew that Amanda would be come out hard. That was the Indian’s plan a well. The early action favored the Indians. In one sequence of events, Whit McDonald played Nikki Ternasky in on the keeper. Nikki faked out the keeper and sent the ball in towards goal, a tally seemed certain. On the goal line a desperate Aces’ toe arrived in the nick of time to deny the Indian effort. That would be the story of the night. Chances were created over and over again with only a desperate effort tuning back the Indians. The Indians returned the favor to the Aces. The defense played like ladies with there hair on fire. Alas in one scrum, a Smith for Amanda got her toe to the ball and that was that. One would be enough. Keeper Lauren Tolman had 6 saves. Canal Winchester’s record is 6-5-4.

Canal Winchester 0 Fisher Catholic 0
The Indians traveled south to match wits with Fisher Catholic. The Fisher home field is not the most welcoming pitch in central Ohio. The field falls about 8’ from one end to the other and is as smooth as a waffle iron.

The Indian’s plan was to give Fisher the advantage in the first stanza. The goal was to have a lead and then getting the hill for the second period, putting Fisher at a big disadvantage. Most of the plan worked, the Indians did not concede many opportunities to the Irish. The same could be said of the Irish. A lot of heavy work was done by the Indian back five: Katie Hahn, Ama Winland, Emilie Lance and Kacy Allen and keeper Lauren Tolman. Six solid attacks were turned away as a clean sheet was maintained.

Scoring opportunities increased for the Indians with the advantage of the hill but three point blank opportunities went for nothing. Ashley Walcott, Katie Hahn, Taylor Tackett, Rachel Monsour, Nikki Ternasky, Brittney Carroll, Heather Linn, Whit McDonald and Jordan Guiler pushed hard against the goal, stringing passes together, overlapping and ripping the ball towards the net. Alas the effort was not rewarded; the gang that could not shoot straight rode off into the sunset, sad and unhappy with a tie.

Bright spot were many; keeper Lauren Tolman had 8 saves, keeping a clean sheet.

Canal Winchester’s record is 6-4-4. Next up is an away match with Amanda Clearcreek, Thursday October 9 at 7:15 PM.

The match with Columbus Academy is cancelled; the first tournament match is home against Groveport Madison, Tuesday Oct 14 at 7 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Kacy Allen, Emilie Lance, Whitney McDonald, Katie Hahn, Heather Linn, Ashley Wolcott, Brittney Carroll, Taylor Tackett, Nikki Ternasky and Ama Winland

Canal Winchester 2 Bloom Carroll 2
Shoot for the Cure and Senior Night, a big evening for the Indians and the arch rivals were in town. Does it get any better? Once again the Indians would contest the pitch with the Bulldogs. There was going to be some yipping and yapping tonight.

Players were flying around from the first whistle. Nobody was giving an inch, both offences searched for an opportunity. The Indians struck first, up the filed the Indian attacked flowed. Ashley Walcott grabbed the sphere away from Brooke Smith and sent a quick ball across the top of the 18 to Whit McDonald. Whit snapped it up and drove in on goal, as the Dog defense reacted Whit shocked them with a laser to the net; 1-0 Indians.

The Dogs were howling and the Indians were prowling, pushing hard to goal. Nikki Ternasky flew up the right side, her mark chocking on the dust. Jessica Long shot in from her sweeper position crashing in to Nikki. The eagle eyed official had seen enough, awarding a shot from the spot. Whit Mc Donald stepped up and smoked GK Christin Anson for a 2-0 lead.

A foul gave the Indians a 2-0 lead and a foul would cut it in half. The Indian defense knocked down a Smith on the edge of the 18. Brooke Smith stepped up and sailed a curving shot into the top left corner of the net, 2-1 Indians.

The second stanza was more of the same, each team generated threats but no tallies. The Indians missing 2 point blank opportunities. The Indian lead lasted until the final 10 minutes. Looking to ice the match, the brain trust of the Indians sent Whit up from her sweeper position to take a corner kick. Just a minute before the same trust had switched Whit and Katie Hahn’s position. All this heavy thinking created a great opportunity for a Bulldog counter attack. Amy Anderson grabbed the rebound and shot up the field with Ashley Wolcott in hot pursuit. Ashley stopped the first attack but the ball ended up with Brooke Smith, a slow roller to the far post tied the match.

On the play Amy Anderson took a tumble and was taken off the field by the squad. After 15 minutes of worry the game resumed. The last Indian chance came when again a PK was awarded, alas the shot inched wide. The sore stayed knotted.

Bright spots were many; keeper Lauren Tolman had 9 saves, several where extraordinary. The entire Indian squad played a first class match: heading, winning 50 50’s, tight marking, moving the ball smartly. It was a joy to see. A special thanks to our three seniors, Brittney Carroll, Shukri Farah and Nikki Ternasky.

Canal Winchester’s record is 6-4-3. Next up is an away match with Fisher Catholic, Monday October 6 at 5 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Kacy Allen, Emilie Lance, Whitney McDonald, Shukri Farah, Katie Hahn, Ashley Wolcott, Brittney Carroll, Taylor Tackett, Nikki Ternasky and Ama Winland

Canal Winchester 2 Logan Elm 0
The Indians and the Braves met in the corn fields with Logan Elm figuring that tonight was the night. The Braves believed a real opportunity existed for victory, harking back to victories achieved in the pre season all seemed set for the Braves. To bad for the bunch from LE they had missed the point of pre season.

The Braves rely on Alicia Salyers to out work the opposition. A simple solution existed for the Indians, sic the energizer bunny on Alicia. Right from the start Ashley Wolcott hung around tic, tac and toeing the ball away; as the game worn on Alicia wore out but the energizer just kept on going and going.

Early pressure by the Indians stretched the Braves back line. While the Braves were adjusting to a threat up the middle, Taylor Tackett made a deep run up the right flank. In a wink, Whit McDonald slipped a ball to Taylor’s feet. Taylor took care of the rest, an arching banana shot flew in over Hannah Riffel. Game winner was in and only 6 minutes were needed. The rest would be easy, run a little here and run a little there. No sweat! The out side mids Heather Linn, Brittney Carroll, Kaleigh Delong and Taylor Tackett flew up and down creating opportunities while taking away the Braves offence.

Half time instruction were simple, connect passes and make the Brave defense commit. Keep them exposed to runs off the ball. Pressure was the word for the Indian defense.

The second half was more hard work by back 4, Ama Winland, Kacy Allen, Katie Hahn and Emilie Lance. Needing a score to level the match, the Braves were in a fever. Time and time again the back 4 denied them.

Mid way through the second period, Katie Hahn switched place with Whit McDonald and ran the offense for the rest of the game. One quick counter attack put the icing on the cake. Ashley Wolcott toed the ball away from Alicia Salyers and ripped it through a gap for Rachel Monsour. Rachel rumbled up on a curving run towards the near post, as the defense reacted Rachel sent a nice bending ball to the back of the net. 2-0 Indians and the rest was history. Nothing left but a bus ride.

One bright spot was keeper Lauren Tolman who had 7 saves and earned a shut out. The other bright spot was the collective effort by the entire team on defense. The Indians flew around battling the Braves for every ball.

Canal Winchester’s record is 6-4-2. Next up is the Shoot for the Cure and senior night match with Bloom Carroll, Thursday October 2 at 7:15 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Kacy Allen, Emilie Lance, Whitney McDonald, Shukri Farah, Katie Hahn, Ashley Wolcott, Brittney Carroll, Heather Linn, Nikki Ternasky and Kaleigh Delong

Canal Winchester 2 Bishop Ready 3
The Indians bunched up Saturday morning to prepare for the Knights. Every thing was ready but the mojo was missing. Who had it was any one’s guess!

The Knights came out strong slamming and bamming their way to an early 1-0 lead. A hard run up the right side put Heather Manning along the end line. Played in the ball was parried away. Lauren Graessel waiting at the 18 snapped up the lose ball and ripped in a shot to the top 1/3 and a Knight lead.

The Indians were not daunted, a solid combination of touches between Whit McDonald, Nikki Ternasky, Heather Linn and Ashley Wolcott put Whit in possession about 30 yards from goal. Whit worked her way in through traffic creating a small crack in the Knight defense and that is all it took. Whit made keeper Williamson pay for her roaming with a nice curving ball to the back of the net, 1-1 all level.

The dust had hardly settled when Ashley Walcott was mugged in the box; luckily the squad was not needed. Whit McDonald stepped up and calmly tapped the ball to the back of the net, 2-1 Indians.

It seemed peaceful and good in Canal but it was only a false calm. The Ready duo of Heather Manning and Jessie Eramo with in the last 6 minutes of the half punished the Indians for a 3-2 lead. Each time Heather fed a waiting Eramo for a tap in.

The second stanza was hard fought but the result stood at 3-2 Ready. Rachel Monsour twisted her ankle to add injury to insult.

Bright spot keeper Lauren Tolman had 8 saves.

Canal Winchester’s record is 5-4-2. Next up is an away match with Logan Elm, Thursday September 25 at 7:15 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Emilie Lance, Kyrstin Warnimont Whitney McDonald, Ama Winland, Katie Hahn, Ashley Wolcott, Brittney Carroll, Shukri Farah, Nikki Ternasky and Rachel Monsour

Canal Winchester 6 Hamilton Township 0
The Indians went to raid the Rangers looking to gather win number 5. Still nursing injuries were Kacy Allen, Taylor Tackett, Jordan Guiler and Amber Wolcott. The rest of the party was fit and looking for a brawl.

Indian faithful got there money’s worth early, a delightful combination of touches put Whitney McDonald up the left side. On an inside overlap steamed Nikki Ternasky, Whit laid the ball in and Nikki one touched it wide to an on coming Ashley Wolcott. Game winner in the 2nd minute, the Indians could have gone home then, happy with a 1-0 victory.

The second tally was much like the first, just reversed. Ashley Wolcott rumbled up the right side with Rangers in hot pursuit. At the last moment Ashley zipped a ball to Heather Linn on the right flank for a nifty finish and a 2-0 lead.

Larceny resulted in the third tally. Whit swiped the sphere from Megan Campbell and lifted it over the back line as Nikki broke in on goal. Nikki gathered the ball and two steps later struck it past Jackie Moore for goal number 3.

The Indian half time focus was to settle down when taking shots. The Indian squad had 9 shots on goal and was hurrying their final touch; patience would result in better satisfaction then a save. The 2nd stanza would also include a keeper switch, Alex Cremeans switched from playing striker in the 1st to keeping in the 2nd. Additionally the Indians switched to a 3-4-3, moving Whit to sweeper and adding Rachel Monsour to the front line.

The revamped attacked quickly resulted in Nikki Ternasky’s 2nd goal of the match. Katie Hahn played Rachel Monsour into space. Rachel drew the defenders to her and beat them with a ball back to Nikki who whipped it into the net; 4-0 Indians.

There was constant pressure offered the Indians good scoring opportunities goal 5 resulted from a crafty combination. Whit McDonald from her deep spot beat the entire defense with one touch, passing the ball behind the Ranger back line for Rachel Monsour to police up and work down the left side. Rachel cut into goal and lifted the ball into the top 1/3 at the far post, 5-0.

All season long the Indians had suffered at the hands of corner kicks. Tonight saw a role reversal, the Indian set play sends Ama Winland up to the front post from her marking back position. Whit played in the corner for a near post shot. Ama did not disappoint, a quick header finished off the scoring and tieh Ranges 6-0.

Bright spots: Kyrstin Warnimont, Brittney Carroll, Whit McDonald and Katie Hahn had outstanding matches. Ashley Wolcott worked hard up and down the line. The Indian attack of Nikki Ternasky, Whit McDonald, Alex Cremeans, Ashley Walcott, Katie Hahn, Rachel Monsour, Brittney Carroll, Kaleigh Delong, Heather Linn, and Shukri Farah generated 16 shots on goal. Lauren Tolman had o saves in her half and Alex Cremeans had one in the 2nd period.

Canal Winchester’s record is 5-3-2. Next up is an away match with Bishop Ready, Saturday September 20 at 1 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Emilie Lance, Heather Linn, Whitney McDonald, Ama Winland, Katie Hahn, Ashley Wolcott, Brittney Carroll, Kaleigh Delong, Nikki Ternasky and Rachel Monsour

Canal Winchester 3 Zane Trace 2
The Indians faced Zane Trace on a beautiful night under the lights; just having lights no was no small feat in central Ohio. The CW squad planned to be like Ike and put the Pioneers lights out early.

Injuries sidelined Kacy Allen, Taylor Tackett, Jordan Guiler and Amber Wolcott while the early school year URI slowed others.

A revamped defense took the field; Katie Hahn stepped out as sweeper, Rachel Monsour in as central defender with Ama Winland and Emilie Lance man marking. Making their first starts was Shukri Farah and Alex Cremeans.

The packed house did not have to wait long for the action. Quickly up the right side combination play with Whit Mc Donald and Heather Linn put Nikki Ternasky and the ball on the end line, Nikki pushed hard against the Pioneer defense blasting a shot. Parried away the Indians struck again, alas off the wood work. Whit pounced and thundered a lightening strike that smoked both the pioneer keeper and the net.

The second tally was mush like the first, heavy pressure set up a try by Whitney McDonald. Again the wood work did the defense, luckily the rebounding ball fell to Nikki Ternasky’s feet. Nikki ripped in her 5th goal of the season for a 2-0 lead.

The Indian half time focus was getting the first score of the half, swinging the ball side to side to draw off the Pioneer sweeper, surround the goal, body position open to the ball and reduce space given to marks.

2-0 Indians and all seemed good. The warm and fuzzy feeling did not last long. A corner kick was earned by the Pioneers. Boom the ball was launched, in waltzed Tasha Harrington to cut the margin in half.

The second stanza’s action was hot and heavy. The Indians would really like to have a TV replay booth. In one strong corner kick, Kyrstin Warnimont jumped on the end of Whit’s kick and bulged the net. The Pioneer keeper swept the ball out and the game went on. The end line official a few yards short of that position missed the score. He must have known it because in the minute, Whit McDonald launched an in swinger and again over the line went the ball. Again it was swept out but on this occasion the Ref signaled the tally and a 3-1 lead.

The bane of the season returned with the same result. Plenty of corner defenses are practiced with little result. Keys are no space for strikers, break up their runs and clear it one touch before it hits the ground. All well and good but with 20 minutes to go, Tori Davis gave an excellent example of how it works when the defense breaks down. An uncontested header made the last 20 minutes very exciting for both clubs.

Bright spots: Kyrstin Warnimont had and outstanding match, working hard up and down the line. Rachel Monsour playing as the central back kept the ball back with our offense. The attacking 6 ( Nikki Ternasky, Whit McDonald, Alex Cremeans, Ashley Walcott, Brittney Carroll, Kaleigh Delong, Heather Linn, Shukri Farah) generated 15 shots on goal, forcing the Pioneer keeper to earn her money. Lauren Tolman had 2 saves.

Canal Winchester’s record is 4-3-2. Next up is an away match with Hamilton Township, Thursday September 17 at 6 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Emilie Lance, Heather Linn, Whitney McDonald, Ama Winland, Katie Hahn, Ashley Wolcott, Shukri Farah, Alex Cremeans, Nikki Ternasky and Rachel Monsour

Canal Winchester 0 Circleville 3
The season has begun to takes its toll on the Indians. Taylor Tackett, Amber Walcott, Jordan Guiler out with injuries. Nikki Ternasky was cleared to play with a brace. On top of that Circleville came in hungry for a win with a record of 3-4.

The Indians took no steps back, ready to give the Tigers all they wanted. Besides a new tiger skin hat would look nice. The first period was going swell except for a 5 minute span that saw the Tigers grab a quick 2-0 lead. Disaster seemed to be approaching but the Indians fought back pushing their attack while blunting Abbey Palmer’s runs. After the 2 quick goals Emilie Lance was assigned the task of shutting Abbey down and that is what happened for the rest of the half. Every where that Abbey went Emilie was sure to go.

The Indian half time focus was getting the first score of the half to begin the task of resting the match away from the Tigers. The Indians squad generated hard pressure and several chances seem in only to turn to disappointment.

The final score came off the mug of Lauren Tolman. Settling in to snag a long shot the ball slipped through Lauren’s fingers and bounced off her mug right to the feet of Abbey Palmer for a 3-0 Tiger lead. It was that kind of night.

Bright spots: The entire Indian squad work hard and played a better match then the score showed. The Indians earned good chances and only bad luck denied them some tallies. The Indians conceded 2 shots on goal the entire second stanza with keeper Lauren Tolman ending the match with 6 saves.

Canal Winchester’s record is 3-3-2. Next up is a home match with Zane Trace, Tuesday September 16 at 7:15 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Brittney Carroll, Emilie Lance, Heather Linn, Kaleigh Delong, Kacy Allen, Whitney McDonald, Ama Winland, Katie Hahn, Ashley Wolcott and Rachel Monsour.

Canal Winchester 3 Buckeye Valley 3
Bitter pill day for the Indians, ninety per cent of the match was well played by the Indians, the 10 % that wasn’t resulted in a tie.

Quickly out of the gate the Indians pressured the Buckeye Valley defense. In the 7th minute Taylor Tackett shot up the right side swinging in behind the Barons back line. Hard pursued by her marking back Taylor zipped the ball across into the path of Rachel Monsour’s run. Rachel finished putting the sphere into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Taylor was not finished just yet; only 2 minutes later Whit McDonald from her positions as sweeper delivered a ball past most of the Baron defense and to Taylor’s feet. Taylor out raced her defender creating a 1 v1 with the Baron keeper. 2-0 Indians as Taylor calmly dribbled around the flopping keeper for a 2-0 lead.

Just when all seemed hunky dory the scourge of the tribe hit again. The baron strikers pushed up hard and worked the ball into the 18 yd box, like bees to honey the Indians were swarming around. Feet were flying but no clearance was achieved for all the whacks at the ball. Result Rachel Paull struck in a score for Buckeye Valley. 2-1 Indians, the scrum would prove to be the Indians Achilles’ heel for the day.

The half time instructions were simple, get the next goal and kill off the Baron’s hope. Six minutes later the Indians did what was asked. Taylor Tackett now playing with a broken toe ripped up the right side making space for a cross to Rachel Monsour. A perfect ball was sent across the goal mouth straight to a hard charging Rachel who one touched the ball into the net for a 3-1 advantage.

As darkness of day began to arrive so did a dark turn of events for the Indians; with less than 10 minutes to go the Indians were working hard to sustain pressure. The back line of the Indians with Whitney McDonald, Emilie Lance, Brittney Carroll, Kacy Allen, Ama Winland and Katie Hahn turned back attack after attack. Just when all seemed fine another tropic depression began to form. Around and around both Indians and Barons flew kicking everything in sight. Out popped the ball right past Indian keeper Alex Cremeans for new life to the Barons, 3-2 stood the score. The storm clouds did not dissipate and again the teams swirled in front of the Indian’s net. Laura Baldwin pushed the ball to the side right to Becky Saas who rifled it in to the heart of the Indians. 3-3 as the Indians drank some very bitter water from the Buckeye Valley well.

Bright spots: The entire team fit for duty played in the match. Keepers Lauren Tolman and Alex Cremeans ended the match with 6 saves. Taylor Tackett and Rachel Monsour together scored 3 goals. Jordan Guiler and Kaleigh Delong stepped up playing a strong right and left out side mid, the two middle mids Ashley Walcott and Katie Hahn worked hard the entire match.

Canal Winchester’s record is 3-2-2. Next up is a home match with Circleville, Thursday September 11 at 7:15 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Brittney Carroll, Emilie Lance, Jordan Guiler, Heather Linn, Kacy Allen, Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Katie Hahn, Ashley Wolcott and Rachel Monsour.

Canal Winchester 2 Jonathan Alder 2
Pioneers and Indians mixing it up, a classic Saturday afternoon matinee straight from the early days of cinema. The Indians worked Friday on contesting the first touch and anticipating the next. The match was made harder with the injury to team captain Nikki Ternasky. Over top of that some changes in formation were made, Whit McDonald moved to sweeper with Emilie Lance sliding to an outside back. The club went with 4 mids, Ashley Wolcott and Katie Hahn now ran the offense from the center.

The first 20 minutes was give and take with each squad having opportunities to seize the lead. A couple of key substitutions moved Amber Wolcott in as an outside mid and Taylor Tackett forward to striker.

Ashley Wolcott began the first successful attack with a dash up the right side; her challenge drew the defense over to meet her. Ashley zipped a ball across to the far post and a hard charging Rachel Monsour. Rachel one touched her shot for a 1-zip lead.

The Pioneers shot back 6 minutes later. The Indians lost shape; a major pow-wow occurred gathering 5 or 6 Indians to the center of the goal mouth, only thing missing was the ball. That worthy object rested with Colleen Brady who shot it in leveling the score 1-1. The first 40 ended even.

The second stanza was a typical Canal Winchester Jon Alter match, tough and hard charging. The two teams have a great history of close hard fought matches and Sept 6 was no different. The Indians created abundant chances to garb the lead but all were turned away by Pioneer keeper Kaity Shultz.

The match seemed headed for a draw when Alter struck with less then 3 minutes to go. A throw in for Alter should have alerted the tribe that something was a foot. A Pioneer player switched sides just to throw in the ball, and for good reason. She chucked it all the way to the far post and an unmarked Colleen Brady who knocked it in with a hard header. Much whooping was heard from the Alter side of the pitch.

The crafty Indians were not done, Whit McDonald was pushed forward into the attack and 50 seconds later the desperate move paid off. Earning a corner kick the Indians surrounded the goal. The clamor was loud and feverish from all parties. The corner was played to the near post, Whitney had tied the score.

The last 2 minutes was all Indians but the final gun sounded and the result was a tie.

Other bright spots: Lauren Tolman’s play was outstanding she kept the Indians in the match with 6 difficult saves. The two new center mids Ashley Wolcott and Katie Hahn worked the middle hard zipping left and right front to back. The 3 marking backs Emilie Lance, Brittney Carroll and Ama Winland controlled Alter’s strikers for the day. Kacy Allen was steady as the stopper.

Canal Winchester’s record is 3-2-1. Next up is an away match with Buckeye Valley (1-2-1), Tuesday September 9 at 5 PM.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Brittney Carroll, Emilie Lance, Kacy Allen, Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Katie Hahn, Ashley Wolcott, Kaleigh Delong, Jordan Guiler and Rachel Monsour

The Indians figured they will have to work on contesting the first touch, using the full 11 when the other team has the ball, think what the next play should be, maintain possession and solve problems on the field.

Bright spots were the return of Jordan Guiler to extended playing time and Keeper Lauren Tolman who ended the match with 13 saves.

Canal Winchester 3 Groveport 2

Seeking a return to their winning ways the Indians raided Groveport in search of a victory.

The run of play was in the Indian’s favor when trouble reared its ugly head. Twice the Indians seemed ready to score but each opportunity ended in failure. A quick counter attack gave the Cruisers a cross into the 6 yard line; the defense pushed it way but only back to the top of the 18. Layla Frommeyer waited and stuck a ball to the near post, at first it looked wide but instead rolled into the net and the Cruisers owned a 1-0 lead. The lead inspired the Cruisers and gave a gut check to the Indians.

The question was called and the Indians answered. Taylor Tackett purloined a ball on the right flank zipping into the attack. Taylors shot was knocked back to where Nikki Ternasky was headed. A quick shot even the score. The Indians pressed their attack and 12 minutes later the Indians earned a free kick from the left side. Rachel Monsour was fouled and knocked down. Whitney McDonald sent the ball into Nikki Ternasky’s path. Nikki did the rest drilling the ball into the net.

In the middle of the stanza the Indians switched on the fly from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 with Ashley Walcott taking over as the second central mid. The move slowed up the Cruiser forays into the Indian final third with out giving away any Indian offence. Amber Walcott and Kaleigh Delong also switched in to adjust the match ups with the Cruisers’ two strikers.

Ten minutes into the second period the Indian defense cleared a ball wide. The ball bounced away from Katie Hahn into the path of a Cruiser defender. Michelle Brumm pounced on the lose ball and one touched a big arching shot that spoiled the Indians mood, the match stood at 2-2.

The heat was building and the Indians were carrying all the wood. The attacking 6 were blistering the Cruiser defense with solid attacks. Ashley Walcott pressed the attacked and drew in the cruiser defense; Ashley pushed a well weight ball into space for Nikki Ternasky. Quickly it became 1v1 with the keeper. Nikki drove in making the keeper commit, instead of shooting Nikki cut left and left Audrianna DeVolt flopping in the tall grass. Nikki calmly slotted home the game winner.

Lauren Tolman ended the match with 4 saves.

Canal Winchester’s record is 3-1-0. Next up is an away match with 2-0 Fairfield Union, Thursday September 4 at 7:15 PM.

Canal Winchester 2 Teays Valley 7

The night was dark the sky was blue up from the south Teays Valley blew and sadly whipped the Indians soundly.

Teays pumped in 7 goals, the first coming in the 3rd minute. Brittany Scott raced up the right side and crossed a big booming shot in that did not bode well for the rest of the evening. The Indians fought back and earned a penalty kick after the Vikings knocked Ashley Walcott down in the box. Whitney McDonald scored from the spot and it seemed as if not all was lost.

It went down hill from there. Given too much space by the Indians, the Vikings ruled the evening. Whitney Mc Donald scored again in the 1st but it was not enough.

Canal Winchester’s record is 2-1-0. Next up is Groveport, Thursday August 28 at 7:15 PM in Groveport.

Canal Winchester 3 Westland 1
The Indians gathered early to plan their assault on the Cougar goal. The schemes were in place with the arrival of the lemon limo.

A hot dry night welcomed the fevered Indians. Hungry for another win, the CWHS crowd did not have long to wait. In the 4th minute Alley Duckworth swiped the sphere from a Cougar back and thundered in to goal. Ally froze the keeper on a hot night and the cooled her with a breezy shot into the net. One zip Indians.

The Cougars pushed hard to level the score but here and there the Indians backs: Brittney Carroll, Ama Winland, Kacy Allen and Emilie Lance and keeper Lauren Tolman, Amber Walcott upset their plans.

Alley Duckworth scored the game winner in the 13th minute. A well weighted shot was ripped towards goal but Cougar keeper Kaylee “the Bus” Thompson paired it away. Alley jumped on the rebound and rifled it back. The Indians were up 2-0 and would need no more. One sour note early in the half a bum calf forced Jordan Guiler to the bench.

Multiple Indian charges and attacks went for naught. Time and time again skillful work put Indians at the door step but each was rebuffed. Late in the first forty the Cougars cut the Indian advantage in half. Earning a corner kick the Cougars sent in an in swinger. Whitney McDonald headed the first attempt clear but not far enough. Erika Teliuc pounced on the ball and tucked in a low roller through multiple legs for a tally. The goal was the first given up this season by the Indians; keeper Lauren Tolman faced five shots in the first period.

The Indians adjusted their scheme in the second half rotating from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2. The emphasis was to continue the attack but to plug up the midfield against the Cougar pressure. Westland had to chase the game and an extra mid would make it even harder for them to do that. The attacking 6 was rotated freely. Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Katie Hahn, Nikki Ternasky, Rachel Monsour, Ashley Walcott, Shukri Farah and Kyrstin Warnimont time and time again sallied into the Westland final third.

Seven minutes into the second period the Indians were rewarded. Katie Hahn chucked a nice ball into the path of a cutting Whitney McDonald. Whit zipped past a futile effort by Westland defenders to send The Bus to the junk yard. 3-1 Indians.

Keeper Lauren Tolman registered 6 saves, a couple spectacularly made. Canal Winchester’s record is 2-0-0. Next up is Teays Valley, Tuesday August 26 at 7:15 PM, CWHS stadium. Only $5, you will get your money’s worth in the first 5 minutes and the rest will be free.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Brittney Carroll, Emilie Lance, Ama Winland, Kacy Allen, Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Katie Hahn, Nikki Ternasky, Alley Duckworth, Jordan Guiler

Canal Winchester 4 Lakewood 0

Opening night was festive with a large over flowing crowd. Six graduated 2007 seniors and MSL Champions were on hand to lend vocal support; Kim Utrecht, Brittany Spicer, Leah Baughman, Rachel Baker, Jordan Osborn and Kelsey Ryan lead the cheers before heading off to college.

The crowd had much to celebrate. Nikki Ternasky scored the game winner in the 1st minute. On the opening kick off the ball was dropped back to Whitney McDonald for a quick pass to Jordan Guiler. Jordan sent it through a gap into the path of Nikki’s run. Nikki cut out and then in putting herself 1v1 with the keeper. The shot whipped into the net and the win was secured. The Lancers tried to answer and did create some pressure but no result. The back four of Brittney Carroll, Ama Winland, Kacy Allen and Emilie Lance were equal to the task. Eight minutes later Alley Duckworth raced through the Lancer defense jumped on Nikki Ternasky’s cross and tucked the ball into the bag for a 2 zip lead. Indians were flying up and down left and right, winning 50 50’s and denying the Lancer’s much opportunity. Whitney McDonald closed out the half’s scoring giving the Indians a 3-0 lead. Whitney purloined the ball from a would-be attacker and cut across the middle. Whitney’s shot arched in over the flopping Lancer keep. A happy gang of Indians headed for the bench with a solid 3 goal lead. Keeper Lauren Tolman faced one shot on goal behind a stout defense.

The second stanza saw the entire Indian squad get in on to victory. Alley Duckworth capped off the scoring. Taylor Tackett ripped a ball up the line to Alley on the right flank. Alley slalomed in against two defenders and was not denied. Zip into the net and the final 4-0 lead.

Keepers Lauren Tolman registered 3 saves; Alex Cremeans faced one shot and saved that. The pair combined for a shut out. Lakewood earned four shots on goal but no scores. Canal Winchester’s record starts the way all the Indian faithful like, 1-0-0. Next up is Westland, Thursday August 21.

Starting Lineup: Lauren Tolman, Brittney Carroll, Emilie Lance, Ama Winland, Kacy Allen, Whitney McDonald, Taylor Tackett, Katie Hahn, Nikki Ternasky, Alley Duckworth, Jordan Guiler

Canal Winchester 3 Amanda Clearcreek 4
The Indians went back to their winning team and again started keeper Jordan Osborn; Kim Uetrecht, Leah Baughman, Ta’Hana Olbrantz and Brittany Spicer on defense. Kelsey Ryan, Whitney McDonald, Rachel Baker and Taylor Tackett played midfield with Nicole Langston and Nikki Ternasky up front. The beginning of the match looked promising for the Indians. The dream of an undisputed Mid State League championship soon dissipated. The Indians demise had two causes, a good Amanda team and mental mistakes by the Indians. Twice in the first half mistakes set the table for the Amanda, Morgan Baldwin had an easy tap in for a 1-0 lead and Aimee Hall pushed a lose ball in for number 2. The situation was tough for the Indians but they had come back before. Importantly just before the first half time expired Rachel Baker sent an early cross into Nicole Langston who scored to bring the game back in reach. The woes continued into the second stanza. Aimee Hall worked herself past three defenders to put Amanda up 3-1. Bleak as it was Whitney McDonald brighten the out look for the Indians with a nifty shot from 30 yards out on the left side. Amanda keeper Megan Meyer had no chance for a save, 3-2 Amanda. The glow of opportunity was short lived; again Aimee Hall punished the Indians for a 4-2 lead. Nicole Langston and Taylor Tackett’s combination play put Nicole back in the box with the ball. Nicole scored her 21 goal to close the gap to 4-3. The Indians were flying all over the field but time was on Amanda’s side and it ran out on Canal. The Amanda had 9 shot on goal with Jordan Osborn stopping five. Canal Winchester’s record went to 11 -2- 3.

Fisher Catholic in years past had a hex on the Indians. Try as the Indians might the girls from Fisher would prevail. It was senior night for the Indians and they were planning on celebrating. The starting line up was keeper Jordan Osborn; Kim Uetrecht, Leah Baughman, Ta’Hana Olbrantz and Brittany Spicer on defense. The attackers were lead by Kelsey Ryan and Nicole Langston. Whitney McDonald, Rachel Baker and Taylor Tackett played midfield with Nikki Ternasky up front. The Indians started out strong putting heavy pressure on the Fisher goal. The pressure was so strong that Nikki Ternasky was grabbed and impeded as she rumbled into the box. The official spotted the infraction and awarded the Indians a penalty kick. Up stepped Kelsey Ryan and zing the ball went past the Irish’s Erin Competti for a one zip lead. Just a couple minutes later the Indian’s defense knocked down an Irish attacker at the top of the 18. Fisher’s Katie Griffin took the direct kick. Right at the wall it went, alas the Indian’s defensive line had a hole. The ball came thru low and just trickled past Jordan Osborn to knot the score. Late in same half Nikki Ternasky and Taylor Tackett pushed the ball hard up the left side. The last touch by Taylor sent Nikki free into the box. Nikki curled it in from the left leaving the Irish keeper no chance but to watch it go; 2 – 1 Indians and the game winner. The Indians were told to expect heavy pressure from the Irish. The best way to keep the Irish off the score board was to put pressure on their goal. The Indians kept up a constant barrage of shots and attacks. Late in the match a spirited and quick attacked paid off. Ta’Hana Olbrantz stepped up and stole an errant pass. Ta’Hana slipped the ball up to Alley Duckworth who cut her way into the box for an easy touch on goal. The Irish could not respond and went down 3-1 for the Indians 11th win of the season. A great senior night was had by all. The Irish did earn 7 shots on goal with Jordan Osborn stopping all but one. Canal Winchester’s record went to 11 -1- 3.

Canal Winchester 3 Bloom Carroll 0
The long awaited match with Bloom Carroll arrived and the Indians were ready for a real donnybrook. It was senior night for the Bulldogs and the Indians were planning a surprise. The starting line up was Jordan Osborn between the pipes, with Kim Uetrecht, Leah Baughman, Ta’Hana Olbrantz and Brittany Spicer on defense. The attackers included Kelsey Ryan, Whitney McDonald, Rachel Baker and Taylor Tackett playing midfield with Nikki Ternasky and Nicole Langston up front. Bloom started strong and played the first 10 minutes on Canal Winchester’s side of the pitch. It took a while for the Indians to solve the Bulldog attack, but solve it they did. Gradually the push was towards the Bloom keeper. A couple of early chances went for naught until Nikki Ternasky smoked two defenders getting up the left side to the end line. Nikki cut up the end line towards goal freezing the defense and zipping a low ball across the front of the net finding Taylor Tackett on the far post. Bang in the net, Taylor perfectly one touched the ball for the game winner. Plenty of soccer was left but the match had been decided. Just two minutes later Nikki Ternasky pushed the ball hard up the left side before laying a ball back to Kelsey Ryan. Kelsey curled in from the left and saw a wide lane open to the far post. She blasted in an arching ball the left Amanda Hildebrand the Bloom Carroll keeper no chance but to wave it by; 2 - zip Indians. The Indians expected a fired up Bulldog eleven for the second half. It was tough luck for the Bulldogs; the Indians had all the answers. Time and Bloom’s chances to win slipped away with no threat. Alley Duckworth’s touch on the ball maintained possession for the Indians and Bloom Carroll chasing the game. Late in the match the final attack paid dividends. Holding the ball in the middle of a swarm of Bulldogs, Ally slipped an easy pass to Nicole Langston for the final tally. Nicole had scored her 19 goal of the year and the Indians were whooping it up. Bloom Carroll did earn 4 shots on goal but Jordan Osborn kept a clean sheet. Canal Winchester’s record went to 10-1-3.

Canal Winchester 1 Zane Trace 1
Saturday morning found the Indians in Pioneer country looking for a win. A great match was played with chances available for both teams. The first stanza was a draw as was most of the second. The Pioneers jumped on the board first. In a rare break down the Indians let Kendra Dalton reach a bouncing ball first, Kendra made the Indians pay; 1 zip to the Pioneers. Action was hot but no result. The Indians pulled a marking back with 10 minutes to go and added a striker going to a 3-4-3. The move paid off with a goal from Whitney McDonald in the 75 minute. Neither team gained a final advantage and it ended 1-1. Canal Winchester’s record went to 9 -1-3.

Canal Winchester 2 Logan Elm 1
The match against the Braves was hard fought with steady pressure put Logan Elm’s goal with little to show for it. Not until the 30th minute did the wall of defense put up by the Braves crack. Whitney McDonald stole an errant ball from a Brave back and zipped in on the keeper. The match up was favorable for the Indians as Whitney basted in the first goal; 1-0 Indians. In the second period many opportunities went for naught until Alley Duckworth pulled a compact defense apart enough to slip in a nice through ball for Nicole Langston to push past the keeper for the game winner. Late in the match Alex McGuire made the Indians pay for giving excessive space with a long arching shot the slipped in just under the cross bar. The Indians won but were not a happy group. Logan Elm had played tough and kept the Indians unbalanced. Jordan Osborn had 2 saves. Canal Winchester’s record went to 9 -1-2.

Canal Winchester 3 Jonathan Alder 3
The Indians started out with six solid shots on goal but nothing to show for it. Strong attacks lead to a big fat zero on the score board. That could not be said for the Pioneers. Chaska Yoder challenged Rachel Baker up the left side. A good solid shove got her passed Rachel’s tackle for a low shot past Jordan Osborn’s out stretched hands; one zip to the Pioneers. More trouble was on the horizon. Late in the first half a long through ball was fielded by Jordan Osborn who gave it a thunderous kick, luck sent it off an Indian defender on to Chaska Yoder’s feet for a two goal lead. The bench was a hot spot at half. The Indians came out fired up and ready for a brawl. Nicole Langston rushed the ball up field and spied Whitney at the 18, a quick ball gave Whitney a chance to work some magic with her feet. Cutting through the Pioneer defense for an easy touch into the net Whitney drew the Indians back to with in one. Heavy pressure was presenting opportunities to the Indians and one more paid off. Nikki Ternasky was smoking the right side of the Pioneer defense with lighting runs at the defense. With 6 minutes to go Nikki pushed in hard and crossed the ball to Whitney’s head for a game tying score. The cheering had hardly stopped when Nikki was on the receiving end of a pass by Taylor Tackett. Nikki flew in on the keeper and whipped in the Indians third score and a one goal lead. Alas the Pioneers pressed hard and earned a tie. In the 78 minute a corner kick was given, in the mad scramble for the ball Hayley McSurley tapped in the tying score. Jordan Osborn stopped 4 shots and Kaity Schultz had 8 for the Pioneers. Canal Winchester’s record went to 8 -1-2.

Taylor Tackett scored the game winner in the 2nd minute with a hard shot from the right wing off double assist from Rachel Baker and Whitney McDonald. Eight minutes later Nicole Langston scored the games second goal on a quick breakaway from a through ball slipped in by Rachel Baker. As the half neared conclusion Kelsey Ryan tacked on 2 goals. The first in the 36th minute, Whitney McDonald laid the ball back to Kelsey who one touched the sphere passed Hamilton Township’s diving Kyla Hubbard and a 3-0 lead. Less then 2 minutes later Taylor Tackett set up Kelsey for goal number 4. Taylor slipped in and shoved the ball to Kelsey who promptly whipped it into the old onion bag. A happy gang of Indians headed for the bench with a solid 4 goal lead. Keeper Jordan Osborn faced no shots on goal behind a stout defense thrown up by Leah Baughman, Kim Uetrecht, Brittany Spicer and Ta’Hana Olbrantz. The second stanza saw the entire Indian squad get in on the victory. Whitney McDonald capped off the scoring on a long ball from the back by Kim Uetrecht. Whit knocked the ball for a 5-0 lead. Hamilton Township did earn on e shot on goal but no scores. Canal Winchester’s record went to 8 -1-1.
